AN ALERT MILITARY FACILITY CTLR BEING USED FOR FLT FOLLOWING PREVENTS A TEMPORARY FLT RESTR AIR SPACE ENTRY BY ISSUING AN ALERT AND A VECTOR.
Narrative
WHILE ON VFR PLEASURE FLT; WE PASSED VERY CLOSE TO THE TEMPORARY FLT RESTR (TFR) LOCATED IN ZZZ; US DUE TO AN INADEQUATE UNDERSTANDING OF THE LOCATION OF THE TFR AND AN OVER SATURATION OF THE ATC SYSTEM ON THAT DAY. PRIOR TO OUR FLT; WE OBTAINED A COMPLETE DUATS WX BRIEFING; INCLUDING THE DEFINITION OF THE TFRS (RADIAL AND DISTANCE; AND LAT/LONG). WE HAD NOT PLOTTED THE TFR'S ON OUR SECTIONAL AND THUS DID NOT MAKE THE CONNECTION FROM THE TEXT PRESENTATION OF THE NOTAM AND TFRS CLOSE PROXIMITY TO OUR ROUTE OF FLT. WE USED A NEAR BY REFERENCE SHORTLY AFTER DEP WE ATTEMPTED TO ESTABLISH FLT FOLLOWING WITH CTR. THIRTY MILES S OF TFR; WE CONTACTED APCH MILFAC CONTROL FOR VFR FLT FOLLOWING. THE CTLR ASKED IF WE WERE FAMILIAR WITH THE ZZZ4 TFR. WE ADVISED THE CTLR THAT WE WERE AWARE OF A RESTR AT ZZZ2; BUT IMMEDIATELY REQUESTED A VECTOR TO ENSURE ADEQUATE SPACING. THE CTLR GAVE US A TURN. A SUBSEQUENT REVIEW OF OUR COURSE AND THE LOCATION OF THE TFR INDICATES THAT WE PASSED VERY NEAR THE RESTR AND ONLY THROUGH THE QUICK COURSE CORRECTION FROM THE MILFAC CTLR DID WE MISS THE TFR. WE LEARNED THAT THE TFR IS LISTED ABOUT 3 MILES S E OF THE TOWN ACROSS FROM ZZZ1 AND NOT RELATED TO ZZZ2. WE SHOULD HAVE TAKEN THE TIME TO PLOT THE TFR'S ON OUR CHART PRIOR TO DEP. THE SYSTEM COULD HAVE HELPED US. THE NOTAM'S SHOULD BE PRESENTED IN A GRAPHICAL FORMAT. WE OBTAINED A COMPLETE DUATS BRIEFINGS; BUT DID NOT MAKE THE CONNECTION FROM THE TEXT PRESENTATION ON OUR ROUTE OF FLT. IN THE CURRENT ENVIRONMENT WHERE ONE CANNOT TO A FLT SERVICE STATION TO REVIEW CHARTS; A BETTER; GRAPHICAL BRIEFING SYSTEM IS REQUIRED. TFR INFO SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN GPS NAVIGATION DATABASE INFO. OUR GPS CURRENTLY PROVIDES ALERTING FOR ALL TYPES OF AIRSPACE EXCEPT FOR TFR'S. WHILE NOT AS USEFUL AS A GRAPHICAL REPRESENTATION; IMMEDIATE RENAMING OF THE TFR ZZZ1 WOULD HELP.
