Synopsis

A B737-800 CREW; WHILE IN THE HOLD AT FQM; WERE QUERIED BY ATC; WHEN THE FMS FLEW AN UNUSUALLY WIDE AND EXTENDED OUTBOUND LEG.

Narrative

ON ARR INTO NEW YORK AIRSPACE; I WAS GIVEN A HOLD AT WILLIAMSPORT VOR AS PUBLISHED. THE HOLD WAS DEPICTED ON ARR 'WILLIAMSPORT 1 ARR' WHICH WE WERE FLYING. I ENTERED THE HOLD INTO THE FMC AND IT DEPICTED THE HOLDING PATTERN ON THE MAP DISPLAY. THE CAPT AND I AGREED IT WAS CORRECT. AS WE APCHED FQM; ATC GAVE US A DSCNT TO APPROX FL270 AND THEN DOWN TO FL210. I ADVISED THEM WE WERE ENTERING HOLD. ATC ASKED US TO PICK UP DSCNT RATE AND I COMPLIED. THE FMC FLEW A VERY WIDE AND EXTENDED OUTBOUND LEG; DUE TO WINDS FROM THE W AT 150 KTS. JUST AS WE WERE ABOUT TO TURN INBOUND; ATC CALLED AND ASKED IF WE WERE ESTABLISHED IN THE HOLD BECAUSE HE SHOWED US WELL S AND W OF WHERE WE SHOULD BE. WE ADVISED THAT WE WERE COMPENSATING FOR HIGH WIND WHICH WE HAD AND WERE ABOUT TO TURN INBOUND. STARTED TURN IN AND WAS THEN CLRED OUT OF HOLD TO EWR. I BELIEVE FMC OVERCOMPENSATED FOR HIGH WINDS AND WE FLEW FURTHER OUTBOUND THAN WE SHOULD HAVE. MY MISTAKES WERE RELYING ON FMC TO DO A PROPER HOLD IN VERY HIGH WIND AND NOT KEEPING TRACK OF TIME AND DISTANCE OF OUTBOUND LEG. I NEED TO MONITOR FMC BETTER AND TAKE OVER QUICKER IF I SEE IT GOING ASTRAY!
