A CARJ CREW; WHILE ATTEMPTING TO PROCURE AN IFR CLRNC AFTER DEPARTING MYF VFR; VIOLATED CLASS B AIRSPACE.
Narrative
AFTER A LONG DELAY ON THE GND FOR IFR RELEASE; PNF (CAPT) DECIDED TO DEPART VFR AND PICK UP CLRNC AIRBORNE. I (PF) AGREED AND BRIEFLY CONSULTED CLASS B LCL CHART. AFTER SETTING UP RADIAL IDENTING CLASS B AIRSPACE WE ASKED FOR AND RECEIVED VFR DEP. ONCE AIRBORNE AND RECEIVING HDOF FROM TWR PNF CHKED IN WITH DEP WHEREIN DEP SAID TO CALL BACK IN 10 MINS. AT THIS POINT I VERIFIED THAT WE WERE STILL INSIDE DEFINING RADIAL TO REMAIN CLR OF CLASS B AIRSPACE. AT THAT POINT I REALIZED THAT #1 AND #2 NAV HEADS WERE TUNED TO THE WRONG FREQ. BEING RATHER FAMILIAR WITH THE LCL AIRSPACE I MADE AN IMMEDIATE NBOUND TURN TO STAY CLR TO THE E AS WELL AS STOPPING THE CLB UNTIL VISUALLY (BY WAY OF LANDMARKS) I WAS CLR TO CLB VFR. I AM RELATIVELY CERTAIN I DID NOT ENTER CLASS B AT ANYTIME AND NEITHER DEP NOR ZLA CTLR QUESTIONED THAT WE PICKED UP CLRNC MINS LATER AND NEVER QUESTIONED THE VFR DEP. LESSON LEARNED; IF THERE IS A LAST MIN CHANGE IN PROC FOR A DEP; MAKE CERTAIN YOU SET UP THE ACFT (TUNE/IDENT RADIOS; CONSULT CHART MORE THOROUGHLY) BEFORE REQUESTING TKOF CLRNC. IF THERE ARE AIRSPD CONDITIONS MAKE SURE YOU REMAIN SITUATIONALLY AWARE AT ALL TIMES.
