A C310 PLT; DEPARTING PVU; EXPERIENCED GEAR PROBS; RESULTING IN A RETURN TO PVU WITH A NOSE GEAR COLLAPSE ON LNDG.

A C310 PLT; DEPARTING PVU; EXPERIENCED GEAR PROBS; RESULTING IN A RETURN TO PVU WITH A NOSE GEAR COLLAPSE ON LNDG.

Narrative

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
