Narrative
ON TKOF LEG FROM ZZZ THE 'R OIL STRAINER CLOG' MESSAGE CAME ON. I WAS ABOUT HALFWAY THROUGH THE AFTER TKOF CHKLIST; SO I COMPLETED THAT CHKLIST; AND THEN I PULLED OUT THE PLT'S OPERATING MANUAL (POM). THE POM DIRECTED US TO PULL THE AFFECTED THROTTLE SLOWLY TO IDLE TO SEE IF THE FAULT WOULD CLR. WE TURNED OFF THE AUTOTHROTTLES AND EVENTUALLY GOT THE THROTTLE ALL THE WAY TO IDLE; BUT THE MESSAGE STAYED ON; THE PROC DIRECTED US TO SHUT THE ENG DOWN. WE COORDINATED WITH ATC FOR A LEVELOFF AT 10000 FT AND A RETURN TO ZZZ SINCE ALL ENG INDICATIONS WERE NORMAL. THE CAPT DIRECTED ME TO CALL COMPANY MAINT AND CONFIRM WE WERE TO SHUT DOWN THE ENG. THIS TOOK PROBABLY LESS THAN 2 MINS; BUT MAINT VERIFIED THE PROC; SO WE SHUT THE R ENG DOWN IN ACCORDANCE WITH POM PROCS. WE LANDED NORMALLY AT ZZZ WITH NO FURTHER PROBS. THROUGHOUT THE INCIDENT; ALL INDICATIONS ON THE ENG WERE NORMAL. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE ENG WAS SHUT DOWN PER THE OPERATING MANUAL AND THE RETURN WAS UNEVENTFUL. THE RPTR SAID WITHIN THE HR A PLANE SWAP WAS MADE AND THE FLT CONTINUED ON AND DURING THE FLT A MESSAGE WAS RECEIVED FROM MAINT ADVISING THE ENG OIL SCREEN WAS FULL OF METAL. THE RPTR SAID THE ENG WAS REPLACED BUT THE SOURCE OF THE METAL IS UNKNOWN.
