RWY EXCURSION LNDG OVERSHOT BY A LOW TIME C172 PVT PLT WHO TRIES TO SIDE SIP HIS ACFT ONTO THE 3000 FT RWY DURING A DESTABILIZED APCH AT POU; NY.

Narrative

DURING NORMAL APCH INTO DUTCHESS COUNTY; NY (POU); ATIS RPTED WINDS LIGHT AND VARIABLE. ON SHORT FINAL; I DETERMINED THAT I WAS SLIGHTLY HIGH AND SO EXECUTED A SLIP. I CROSSED THE NUMBERS AT 80 KIAS WITH RED OVER WHITE ON THE VASI-L. THE ACFT FLOATED DOWN THE RWY; TOUCHING DOWN LONG. DESPITE FULL AILERON INTO THE WIND; THE ACFT DRIFTED R. DURING THIS TIME I WAS APPLYING AERODYNAMIC AS WELL AS WHEEL BRAKING. THE R WHEEL DEPARTED THE RWY SHORT OF THE RWY END AND PROCEEDED TO OVERRUN THE RWY. I EXECUTED A SUCCESSFUL 180 DEG TURN ON THE GRASS; AND PROCEEDED TO THE FBO WHERE I SUBMITTED A RPT TO THE TWR. THERE WERE NO DAMAGES; EITHER TO THE ACFT OR TO ARPT EQUIP. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. I BELIEVE THAT I WAS DEALING WITH A SIGNIFICANT TAILWIND. THE PLT OF ANOTHER C172 RPTED A 90 DEG XWIND OF 10 KTS. THIS IS MY FIRST INCIDENT. I SHOULD HAVE GONE AROUND WHEN I SAW THAT I WAS LNDG LONG ON THE 3000 FT RWY. ALSO; I NEGLECTED TO ASK FOR A WIND CHK. WHILE ON FINAL; I DID NOT CTL MY AIRSPD PROPERLY. I FAILED TO CTL THE ACFT.
