Narrative
ABOUT XA00 ON MAY/SAT/02 I LANDED ON RWY 17 AT AZO; MI. I EXITED THE RWY WITH A R TURN ONTO RWY 27 AND THEN TURNED R UP TXWY A; AS INSTRUCTED BY THE TWR. I THOUGHT THAT WE HAD BEEN CLRED TO THE GATE AND CROSSED RWY 23 AFTER CLRING R AND L. AFTER XING RWY 23; GND INSTRUCTED US TO CALL THE TWR. THE TWR SUPVR INFORMED ME THAT RWY 23 HAD BEEN ACTIVE AND AN ACFT HAD BEEN COMING IN FOR LNDG WHEN WE HAD CROSSED. HE APOLOGIZED THAT NO ONE HAD TRIED TO STOP US UNTIL AFTER WE WERE XING; BUT SAID THE BLAME WOULD BE PLACED ON ME FOR LACK OF PROPER SEPARATION. I'M NOT SURE WHY I THOUGHT WE HAD BEEN CLRED TO THE GATE. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS TO THIS INCIDENT WERE AN EARLY SHOW THAT MORNING AND THE RESULTING FATIGUE FROM GETTING ONLY ABOUT 4 HRS SLEEP. MY FO HAD ALSO SLEPT LITTLE THE NIGHT BEFORE AND HAD JUST RETURNED RECENTLY FROM ABOUT A 6 MONTH FURLOUGH. LATER WE ALSO DISCOVERED THAT HIS HEADSET WAS BROKEN AND AT TIMES CUT OUT AND CAUSED STATIC. AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT THE TWR WAS VERY BUSY WITH STUDENT PLT TFC. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 547589: CAPT THOUGHT WE WERE CLRED TO THE RAMP. WE NEVER RECEIVED A HOLD SHORT INSTRUCTION SO WE CROSSED RWY 5/23. BAD CREW COM.
