C560 FLC MISPROGRAMMED THEIR HOLDING PATTERN RESULTING IN ARTCC INTERVENTION BACK TO CORRECT HOLDING LOCATION.

Narrative

WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO HOLD OFF AN INTXN. I WENT TO PUT THE HOLD INTO THE FMS-GPS BOX AND INADVERTENTLY MOVED THE HOLDING FIX TO RIGHT WHERE WE WERE. WE WERE ALL SET UP TO HOLD MANUALLY ON THE RADIAL DEFINING THE FIX IF THE BOX DIDN'T WORK AND WHEN OUR FIX CAME UP ON THE DISPLAY SCREEN RIGHT WHERE WE WERE (BEFORE THE BOX WAS PROGRAMMED TO HOLD) WE DECIDED RATHER QUICKLY TO MAKE THE TURN TO THE OUTBOUND HDG. WELL; WE DID THAT BEFORE CHKING THE DME; SO WE WEREN'T FULLY BACKING OURSELVES UP. WE ACCEPTED THAT BIT OF INFO OFF THE DISPLAY AS FACT FOR A FEW MOMENTS AND IT WASN'T. ATC NOTICED IT BY ABOUT THE TIME WE TURNED 30 DEGS AND TOLD US TO COME ALL THE WAY AROUND; WE WERE TO HOLD AT THE FIX. THEY EVIDENTLY THOUGHT WE MISTOOK OUR 10 MI LEGS FOR OUR HOLDING POINT. ANYWAY; THERE WAS NO CONFLICT AND ATC DID NOT SEEM PUT OUT; THANKFULLY. ONCE WE PASSED OUR ILL DEFINED FIX; EVERYTHING ON THE SCREEN AND IN THE GPS WAS RIGHT. WE BACKED THINGS UP MORE DILIGENTLY AFTER THAT. LATER ON THAT TOUR; WE WERE ASSIGNED ANOTHER HOLD; TALKED OVER HOW TO ENTER IT; FULLY BACKED IT UP AND EVERYTHING WORKED FINE; JUST AS IT HAS IN THE SIMULATOR WHERE I'VE DONE HOLDS MANY TIMES. BACKING THINGS UP IS VERY IMPORTANT; BUT BETTER TRAINING AIDS FOR THESE BOXES IS ALSO NEEDED AS WE COME TO RELY ON THEM MORE AND MORE.
