A B737-700 CREW HAD A TRACK DEV ON THE CHILY 1 SID DEPARTING PHX.
Narrative
MISSED TURN AT WAYPOINT. FLT DEPARTED PHX ON THE CHILY 1 DEP. FOLLOWING VECTORS; WE WERE DIRECTED TO INTERCEPT PXR 321 DEG RADIAL AND CONTINUE SID. PF INTERCEPTED AND TRACKED PXR 321 DEG RADIAL WITH VOR/LOC. A COMBINATION OF FORGETTING TO SELECT LNAV AND SOME CONFUSION OVER FMC PROGRAMMING OF THE LYNXX 7 INTO BURBANK CAUSED AN OVERFLY OF CHILY INTXN. A NORMAL COURSE TURN AT CHILY IS 65 DEGS. PF EXECUTED 120 DEG TURN FOR TIMELY RTE CORRECTION AND AVOIDANCE OF TFC TO THE N. CORRECTION WAS COMPLETE IN APPROX 2 MINS. ZAB ATC CTLR THOUGHT WE HAD DEVIATED INTO AIRSPACE S OF COURSE BECAUSE OF OUR ABRUPT CORRECTION. IN FACT; THE DEV WAS N OF COURSE. CTLRS LATER CONFIRMED THAT NO AIRSPACE OR TFC CONFLICTS TOOK PLACE. LNAV IS A GREAT TOOL; HOWEVER; PROMOTES COMPLACENCY WHEN NAVING IN OTHER MODES. PLTS MUST MAINTAIN BETTER VIGILANCE WHEN NOT NAVING IN THE PRIMARY LNAV MODE. SINCE IT IS OUR PRIMARY MODE OF NAV; IT SHOULD PROBABLY BE STRESSED THAT IT BE USED WHENEVER FEASIBLE. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 555228: EVENT OCCURRED DURING COCKPIT DISTRS OF FREQ CHANGE; FLT PLAN CORRECTION; FMS PROGRAMMING. CREW DISCUSSED IMPORTANCE OF MINIMIZING DISTRS DURING BUSY PHASES OF FLT. EVENT COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED BY PF EXERCISING CLOSER ATTN TO APCHING TURN AT CHILY INTXN AND SELECTION OF LNAV EARLIER IN THE FLT PATH TO ASSIST IN MGMNT OF FLT PLAN DURING BUSY PORTIONS OF FLT.
