Narrative
AFTER LNDG ON RWY 17C AT DFW; WE WERE TOLD TO CROSS RWY 17R AT TXWY EL BEHIND THE F100 IN FRONT OF US. WE CROSSED THE MAIN PORTION OF THE RWY; BUT COULD NOT CONTINUE TO CLR THE RWY AS THE F100 IN FRONT OF US HAD STOPPED SHORT OF TXWY L. I DO NOT KNOW IF THE ACFT IN FRONT OF US HAD BEEN CLRED UP TO TXWY K OR NOT. I DON'T BELIEVE THAT HE WAS GIVEN THAT INSTRUCTION AND APPARENTLY HAD NO IDEA THAT WE WERE DIRECTLY BEHIND HIM. THERE WAS A WDB ACFT IN POS FOR TKOF ON RWY 17R AND I WAS NOT SURE IF MY TAIL WAS COMPLETELY CLR OF THE RWY. I MOVED UP AS CLOSE AS I COULD AND RAPIDLY SWITCHED TO 121.8 AND ATTEMPTED TO BARGE IN ON THE FREQ TO MAKE THE ACFT IN FRONT AWARE OF OUR DIRE PREDICAMENT. THERE WAS A LONG STREAM OF ATC GND INSTRUCTIONS BEING GIVEN TO OTHER ACFT AND I WAS UNABLE TO GET THROUGH. I COULD NOT TELL IF THE WDB ON THE RWY WAS ROLLING OR NOT; AND I WAS JUST ABOUT TO GO BACK TO TWR FREQ AND TELL HIM TO ABORT HIS ROLL IF HE HAD STARTED; WHEN THE ACFT IN FRONT OF US MOVED UP AND WE WERE ABLE TO COMPLETELY CLR THE RWY. THIS SIT MUST NOT BE ALLOWED TO HAPPEN AGAIN AND I HAVE 2 SUGGESTIONS TO HELP PREVENT IT IN THE FUTURE: 1) TWR CTLRS MUST ALWAYS INSTRUCT THE FIRST PLANE TO PULL ALL THE WAY UP TO TXWY K; AND 2) ALL PLTS MUST BE MORE PRECISE AND READ BACK THE INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN BY TWR SO THAT THERE IS NO CHANCE OF MISUNDERSTANDING. I CONTACTED THE E TWR SUPVR AFTER REACHING THE GATE; AND INFORMED HIM OF THE SIT IN CASE HE WANTED TO REVIEW THE TAPES.
