Synopsis

A B737-700 WAS RPTED TO HAVE LATERAL CTL OSCILLATION. MAINT REQUESTS POLICY OR PROC TO DETERMINE WHEN LATERAL CTL OSCILLATION PRESENT.

Narrative

CAPT WROTE UP A POSSIBLE LATERAL CTL OSCILLATION. UPON CONFERRING WITH CAPT; HE WAS ASKED IF HE CONSIDERED THIS TO BE A LATERAL CTL OSCILLATION EVENT. HE STATED HE DIDN'T KNOW BECAUSE HE HAD NEVER EXPERIENCED ONE BEFORE. HE DID STATE HE WASN'T CONCERNED WITH WHAT HE FELT IN HIS RUDDER PEDALS ON CLBOUT. HIS AFT FLT ATTENDANT WAS COMPLAINING ABOUT A VIBRATION IN THE AFT GALLEY FLOOR AND WALLS. NO RPT FROM ANYWHERE ELSE IN CABIN. ZZZ MAINT WAS DIRECTED TO COMPLY WITH THE MAINT MANUAL INSPECTION AND TO PERFORM VISUAL INSPECTION OF ELEVATORS; TABS; SEALS; WHEEL WELL FAIRING; AND WING-TO-BODY FAIRINGS. ELEVATOR AND TABS WERE FOUND TO BE SECURE AND NO OTHER DEFECTS NOTED. THE MODIFIED ELEVATOR TABS WERE INSTALLED ON JUL/THU/02 AND FREE PLAY INSPECTION COMPLIED WITH ON JUL/SUN/02. WITH CAPT'S WORDS AND NO DEFECTS FOUND; THE DECISION WAS MADE THAT THIS DIDN'T CONSTITUTE A LATERAL CTL OSCILLATION EVENT. THE FLT RECORDER WAS REMOVED AND SENT TO ZZZ1 AS A PRECAUTION. THE ENGINEERING AUTH WASN'T ASSIGNED DUE TO OUR DETERMINATION. THE ACFT WAS REMOVED FROM SVC THE NEXT MORNING AND THE ENGINEERING AUTH COMPLIED WITH AND TEST HOP PERFORMED WITH NO DEFECTS FOUND. THERE IS NO POLICY IN PLACE TO DESIGNATE A LATERAL CTL OSCILLATION EVENT.
