B36 BONANZA PLT HAS RWY INCURSION.
Narrative
PIC WAS HOLDING SHORT AT D2. GND CTL HAD OFFERED 1) FULL LENGTH TKOF; WHICH WOULD INVOLVE XING RWY 36R AND LONG LINE OF DEPARTING ACR PLANES; OR 2) INTXN TKOF FROM D2. PIC CHOSE #2 -- INTXN TKOF FROM D2. TWR CTL INSTRUCTED PLT TO 'CROSS' RWY 36R AND TURN AT C2. PIC READ BACK THE INSTRUCTION. UPON ENTERING RWY; PIC SAW THAT CONSTRUCTION WAS BLOCKING TXWY ACROSS FROM D2; AND HE COULD NOT CROSS THE RWY THERE. PIC CALLED TWR FOR CLARIFICATION. TWR DID NOT ANSWER. TWR GAVE GAR INSTRUCTIONS TO AIRLINER CLRED TO LAND. PLT TAXIED TO R (AWAY FROM C2 WHICH WOULD HAVE BEEN BACK-TAXIING) TO GET AROUND CONSTRUCTION. THEN; TWR INSTRUCTED PIC TO EXIT RWY 36R AT TXWY R; TURN L ON TEMPORARY TXWY; THEN ON TO TXWY C FOR TAXI TO RWY 36R; AND SWITCH TO GND CTL. IN SUMMARY; NO HARM WAS DONE; EXCEPT A PLANE WAS SENT ON A GAR. PIC SHOULD HAVE QUESTIONED TWR MORE BEFORE ACCEPTING THE INSTRUCTION. PIC COULDN'T GET A RESPONSE FROM TWR; SO PIC DECIDED TO EXIT RWY 36R AS FAST AS POSSIBLE BY TURNING R. IN HINDSIGHT; TWR'S USE OF THE WORD 'CROSS' WAS THE CONFUSION; AS IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO CROSS BECAUSE OF CONSTRUCTION. A BETTER UNDERSTOOD COMMAND WOULD HAVE BEEN 'TURN L; BACK-TAXI TO C2.' PIC WILL QUERY TWR IN MORE DETAIL IN THE FUTURE BEFORE PROCEEDING; AND WILL VERIFY PATTERN ON RWY DIAGRAM.
