AN EMB135 FLC ENTERS THE HOLD AT SCUPP INTXN ON THE WRONG SIDE WITH AN INAPPROPRIATE HEADING SELECTED OFF THE VOR AT BOS; MA.

Narrative

MY FLT WAS ENRTE FROM PWM TO BOS AT 15000 FT AND 315 KTS. WE WERE DIRECT TO SCUPP INTXN. ABOUT 10 MI FROM SCUPP WE GOT AN ATC FREQ CHANGE AND WHEN WE CHKED IN WE WERE TOLD TO HOLD E OF SCUPP AS PUBLISHED. I IMMEDIATELY WENT TO FLT IDLE TO SLOW; AND GRABBED MY MAP TO FIND SCUPP. I ENTERED 082 DEGS INBOUND COURSE; R TURNS AND 10 MI LEGS. (ATC APPROVED 10 MI LEGS.) MOMENTS LATER WE PASSED OVER SCUPP AND I TOLD THE FO TO CALL ENTRY INTO THE HOLD. MY FO ASKED TO LOOK AT MY MAP TO VERIFY THE HOLD. HE THEN PROGRAMMED HIS FMS. A CTLR CALLED TO VERIFY THAT WE WERE HOLDING E AS PUBLISHED. I LOOKED AT MY MAP TO VERIFY HOLDING PATTERN AND MY FO ACKNOWLEDGED THAT WE WERE HOLDING AS PUBLISHED. I THEN REALIZED I HAD ENTERED THE INCORRECT INBOUND LEG. I TRIED TO RESET THE FMS AND COULD NOT GET IT TO TAKE RIGHT AWAY. I SELECTED HEADING ON THE FLT GUIDANCE CTLR AND WENT BACK TO VOR-NAV AND SET THE 262 DEG COURSE FOR THE CORRECT INBOUND LEG TO SCUPP OFF THE BOSTON VOR. THE HOLD WAS QUESTIONED AGAIN BY A DIFFERENT CTLR AND MY FO STATED THAT WE WERE CORRECTING. THE CTLR STATED SOMEONE ELSE HAD DONE THE SAME THING EARLIER. WE WERE THEN ISSUED A 060 DEG HDG AND STARTED THE VECTOR PROCESS INTO BOS FOR THE ILS RWY 4R. 1) THERE WAS NO ADVANCE NOTICE OF THE HOLD. THAT GREATLY CONTRIBUTED TO A RUSHED REQUIREMENT TO PROGRAM THE FMS. 2) THE HOLD WAS 'DREADED;' I WAS TRYING TO CATCH A FLT HOME; AND WOULD HAVE MADE IT WITHOUT THE DELAY. 3) FO ALSO INTERPRETED THE HOLD INCORRECTLY AND DID NOT HAVE HIS OWN MAP OUT AND ACCESSIBLE. 4) I SHOULD HAVE DOUBLE-CHKED THE HOLD AND ORIENTED MYSELF MORE APPROPRIATELY ON THE INBOUND LEG.
