Narrative
I DEPARTED MAX WESTHEIMER (OUN) ARPT AT APPROX XA45 IN MY PIPER TWIN COMANCHE. WINDS WERE OUT OF THE N ABOUT 10 KTS; SKY CLR. I WAS JUST TAKING A SHORT FLT FOR FUN; BEFORE MY WIFE WHO WAS GOING TO FLY OUR ACFT WITH AN INSTRUCTOR TO WORK ON HER MULTI-ENG RATING. THEY HAD TOLD ME THE PLANE HAD A ROLLING TENDENCY THAT I WANTED TO CHK OUT. THE ROLL WAS BEING CAUSED BY TOO MUCH L RUDDER TRIM; WHICH I CORRECTED. FEELING THAT THE PLANE WAS RUNNING FINE; I THEN RELAXED AND DID A FEW TURNS ABOUT 10 MI S OF OUN. I DECIDED TO DO A TOUCH-AND-GO AT A SMALL UNCTLED FIELD LOCATED AT PURCELL; OK. I HAD LANDED THERE MANY TIMES IN THE PAST AND FELT VERY COMFORTABLE. I APCHED ON A DOWNWIND FOR RWY 35 SCANNING FOR ACFT. I FORGOT TO SWITCH TO CTAF. I WAS LISTENING TO OUN TWR FREQ. I NOTICED A GROUP OF VEHICLES NEAR THE N END OF THE RWY WHICH WAS OUT OF PLACE FOR THIS SMALL FIELD. I MADE A NORMAL APCH; LANDED AND TOOK OFF WITHOUT INCIDENT. DURING CLBOUT; I LOOKED BACK OVER MY R SHOULDER TO SEE WHAT WAS GOING ON AND SAW SEVERAL FIRE TRUCKS; AMBULANCES; AND POLICE CARS. I ALSO NOTICED A LCL NEWS VEHICLE. I REALIZED THAT SOMETHING BIG MUST HAVE BEEN GOING ON AS I FLEW BACK AND LANDED AT OUN. I SWITCHED OVER TO CTAF TO SEE IF I COULD REACH SOMEONE ON THE GND. NO ONE ANSWERED. AFTER LNDG; I DECIDED TO CHK FSS FOR NOTAMS. THE FSS OPERATOR SAID THERE WAS A NOTAM CLOSING THE RWY ON NOV/TUE/02 AND NOV/WED/02 FROM XA00-XC00. I LANDED 1 HR BEFORE THE RWY REOPENED. I TRIED TO REACH THE POLICE AND FIRE DEPTS FOR PURCELL; BUT FOUND NO ONE IN CHARGE OF THE EVENT. THE NEWS THAT EVENING HAD A PIECE ON THE EVENT DESCRIBING IT AS AN EMER PREPAREDNESS DRILL FOR AN AIRPLANE CRASH WITH FIRE AND BIOHAZARD. LUCKILY; NO FOOTAGE OF MY TOUCH-AND-GO. I KNOW BETTER TO NOT CHK NOTAMS BEFORE ANY FLT IN THIS DAY AND AGE. THIS OCCURRENCE HAS 'CURED' ME AND I'LL ALWAYS CHK FOR NOTAMS NO MATTER HOW SHORT A FLT I INTEND TO TAKE.
