Synopsis

C172 PLT HAD ENG FAILURE AND WAS FORCED TO MAKE AN OFF ARPT LNDG. THE PLT THEN FLEW THE ACFT WITHOUT HAVING A CERTIFIED MECH DETERMINE WHY THE ENG FAILED.

Narrative

AS I WAS SETTING MYSELF UP FOR THE APCH TO THE ARPT; THE ENG DIED. I WAS AT 1100 FT MSL AND BY THE TIME I HAD GONE THROUGH THE EMER PROCS; I HAD LOST 300+ FT. I ATTEMPTED A RESTART; WHICH FAILED AND MADE A COMMITMENT TO LAND IN A CONSTRUCTION SITE ISOLATED FROM EXISTING HOMES S OF THE CHOSEN FIELD. I ANNOUNCED I WAS EXECUTING A FORCED LNDG OVER THE RADIO AND MADE A SLIGHT XWIND LNDG IN THE CONSTRUCTION SITE THAT HAD RECENTLY BEEN CLRED; BUT NO CONSTRUCTION HAD BEEN STARTED. AFTER LNDG; I TRIED TO CONTACT ANYONE ON THE RADIO AND HEARD ANOTHER PLT FORWARDING MY XMISSIONS ACKNOWLEDGING THAT I HAD SAFELY LANDED IN A CONSTRUCTION SITE; THAT THERE WERE NO DAMAGES OR INJURIES AND AT WHICH TIME I INFORMED THEM THAT I WAS SHUTTING OFF MY MASTER. AFTER INSPECTING THE PLANE; I DETERMINED THE ACFT WAS NOT DAMAGED; WOULD BE SAFE TO FLY; SURVEYED THE SITE AND RESTARTED THE ENG. CONSEQUENTLY; I DECIDED THAT TAKING OFF WOULD BE SAFE AND TAXIED TO A LOCATION ON THE SITE THAT PRESENTED A SAFE POS. I EXECUTED A NORMAL TKOF WITHOUT ANY PROBS AFTER A VERY THOROUGH RUN-UP.
