A CFI ADMITTED LWOC AT SWO. ALLOWING HIS STUDENT TO MAKE 3 TOUCH-AND-GOES.

Narrative

I WAS CONDUCTING A TRAINING FLT WITH A STUDENT IN THE STILLWATER; OKLAHOMA AREA AT APPROX XA30 LCL. AFTER PRACTICING MANEUVERS IN THE PRACTICE AREA; WE WERE RETURNING TO THE ARPT KSWO TO PRACTICE LNDGS. WE CONTACTED SWO TWR APPROX 8 MI E OF THE ARPT AND ADVISED THEM OF OUR INTENTIONS. THEY REPLIED THAT WE WERE TO CONTACT THEM OVER BOOMES LAKE; APPROX 1 1/2 MI E OF ARPT. MY HEADSET AND/OR RADIO WAS INTERMITTENT THE ENTIRE FLT. MY STUDENT DID NOT SEEM TO HAVE A PROB. I WAS ADJUSTING MY HEADSET TO SEE IF I COULD FIX THE PROB AS WE APCHED BOOMES LAKE. ONCE MY HEADSET WAS ON AND WORKING; I TOLD MY STUDENT TO CALL THE TWR. MY STUDENT TOLD ME THAT HE ALREADY HAD. WE LANDED ON RWY 4 AFTER ENTERING THE PATTERN ON A R DOWNWIND. AFTER A TOUCH-AND-GO; WE PROCEEDED ON A L (STANDARD) PATTERN AND DID ANOTHER TOUCH-AND-GO. AFTER THAT; I REALIZED THAT I HAD NOT BEEN PICKING UP ANYTHING FROM THE TWR ON MY HEADSET BEFORE THE THIRD LNDG. I ASKED MY STUDENT IF HE HAD BEEN CLRED TO LAND. MY STUDENT REPLIED; 'NO.' I ASKED HIM TO CONTACT THEM. WHEN HE DID; THE TWR SAID THEY HAVE NOT SPOKEN TO US SINCE WE ENTERED THEIR AIRSPACE. AT THIS POINT; I COULD HEAR THE TWR JUST FINE. AFTER LNDG; I ASKED MY STUDENT IF HE HAD CALLED THE TWR OVER BOOMES LAKE. MY STUDENT SAID; 'YES; BUT THEY NEVER RESPONDED.' WE HAD DONE 3 LNDGS WITHOUT ATC CLRNC. I BELIEVE THE CHAIN OF EVENTS THAT CAUSED THIS PROB WERE AS FOLLOWS: 1) MY MALFUNCTIONING EQUIP. 2) MY POOR SUPERVISION OF MY STUDENT. I SHOULD HAVE MADE SURE THAT TWR HAD CLRED HIM TO LAND INSTEAD OF ASKING HIM IF HE 'CALLED THEM.' 3) STUDENT'S INEXPERIENCE. WITH JUST UNDER 20 HRS OF FLT TIME; AS THE INSTRUCTOR; I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN TO BE MORE AWARE OF EXACTLY WHAT WAS GOING ON. AFTER PARKING; I IMMEDIATELY GNDED THE ACFT UNTIL A MECH COULD CHK ON THE RADIOS. I SPOKE WITH MY STUDENT AND EXPLAINED WHAT WE HAD DONE WRONG. I AM AWARE THAT THIS IS MY FAULT. AS THE INSTRUCTOR I SHOULD HAVE MAINTAINED MORE EFFECTIVE COM WITH MY STUDENT. I HOPE THAT THIS RPT WILL HELP IN ANY WAY POSSIBLE.
