TFC DELAY DUE TO WX AT ORD; A S80 FLT CREW ALLOWS THE ACFT TO OVERSHOOT THE TURN ONTO THE OUTBOUND LEG OF THE HOLDING PATTERN AT WATSN INTXN; IN.

Narrative

RECEIVED INSTRUCTIONS TO HOLD AT WATSN INTXN. BOTH CREW MEMBERS REVIEWED HOLDING DATA AND UPDATED/CONFIRMED IN GPS. FO (PF) ASKED SOME QUESTIONS CONCERNING HOLDING 'ON THE BOX' SINCE HE HAD NOT USED IT BEFORE FOR A HOLD. CAPT RPTED ENTERING HOLD; AND AFTER BOTH CREW MEMBERS VERIFIED ACFT WAS TURNING CORRECT DIRECTION FOR HOLD; CAPT STOOD UP TO HAND TRAYS BACK. THE NEW COCKPIT DOOR PROVED MORE DIFFICULT TO OPEN AND CAUSED SOME CONFUSION. AFTER ABOUT 70 DEGS OF TURN; FO INQUIRED TO CAPT ABOUT SHALLOW ANGLE OF BANK BOX WAS COMMANDING; GIVING ONLY 12 DEGS OF ROLL. AT SAME TIME; FO REVERTED TO HDG SELECT TO MANUAL PERFORM THE HOLD AND INCREASE BANK ANGLE. SHORTLY AFTER; WE HAD INCREASED OUR BANK ANGLE; THE CTLR INQUIRED ABOUT OUR ENTRY -- STATING WE HAD GONE DEEPER THAN HE HAD EXPECTED. WE CONCURRED AND STATED WE WERE NOW IN A STEEPER BANK TO CORRECT BACK. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 572745: FO; WHO WAS RELATIVELY NEW TO THE ACFT; WAS PF. I NOTICED WE WERE IN HDG SELECT AND W OF OUR INTXN. AT THE SAME TIME; I ASKED THE FO WHY WE WERE NOT IN NAV. THE CTLR QUESTIONED US AND SAID WE WERE 12 MI W OF WATSN. TO ADD TO THE ISSUE; WE HAD BEEN IN PERFORMANCE MODE PRIOR TO DSCNT AND RATHER THAN RETURNING TO SLOWER SPD WE HAD SELECTED; IT WENT BACK TO A FASTER CRUISE SPD. WE ALSO FEEL THAT THE GPS COULD HAVE BEEN ALTERED TO HAVE A LESSER BANK. WHILE WE FELT WE WERE BOTH PAYING SOUND ATTN TO THE FLT PROGRESS; IT SHOWS HOW QUICKLY THESE THINGS CAN OCCUR. WHILE I THOUGHT IT WAS A REASONABLE TIME TO DEAL WITH THE TRAYS; I SHOULD HAVE WAITED UNTIL WE WERE MORE ESTABLISHED IN HOLD OR HAD GONE AROUND THE TRACK A FEW TIMES.
