C750 DEPARTING VNY EXPERIENCED CONFUSION WITH ATC RESTR AREA REGARDING FILED CLRNC.

Narrative

WE WERE ON CLBOUT FROM VNY ON THE NEWHALL 6 DEP UNDER SOCAL CTL ON A 310 DEG HDG TO INTERCEPT THE PMD 218 DEG RADIAL WITH THE AUTOPLT ENGAGED. WE HAD THE FMS SELECTED ON HDG WITH NAV ARMED TO INTERCEPT THE COURSE. WHILE ON THIS HDG; THE CTLR ASKED WHY WE HAD FILED THROUGH RESTR AIRSPACE. WE TOLD THE CTLR THAT OUR DISPATCHERS HAD FILED OUR FLT PLAN AND THAT WE WOULD DISCUSS IT WITH THEM. THE CTLR DIDN'T SEEM SATISFIED WITH THAT. THE CTLR TOLD US TO TURN TO A 270 DEG HDG; WHICH WE DID. A SHORT TIME LATER; HE GAVE US A 290 DEG HDG WHICH WAS SET UNDER THE HDG BUG. WHILE DISCUSSING THE ISSUE OF THE RESTR AIRSPACE; THE FMS INTERCEPTED THE 218 DEG RADIAL AND STARTED A R TURN AWAY FROM 290 DEGS. WHEN I REALIZED THAT WE WERE TURNING; I INITIATED A L TURN BACK TO 290 DEGS. WHILE IN THIS TURN; THE CTLR ASKED WHAT HDG WE WERE ON AND WE REPLIED THAT WE WERE ROLLING OUT ON A 290 DEG HDG. THE CTLR THEN CLRED US DIRECT TO LANDO. WE ASKED THE CTLR TO CONFIRM THE SPELLING OF LANDO AND ONCE CONFIRMED WE TURNED BACK TO THE R; ROLLING OUT ON DIRECT COURSE OF 320 DEGS TO LANDO. WE WERE SOMEWHAT CONFUSED ABOUT THE CLRNC AND QUERIED THE CTLR ABOUT IT. HE CONFIRMED DIRECT TO LANDO DIRECT FMG DIRECT SUN. WE WERE THEN SENT TO ZLA. WHEN WE CHKED IN WITH ZLA; WE WERE CLRED DIRECT TO SUN. THIS CLRNC PARALLELED OUR ORIGINAL FLT PLAN CLRNC AND TOOK US THROUGH THE SAME RESTR AREAS THAT THE SOCAL CTLR QUESTIONED US ABOUT. THE SOCAL CTLR'S QUESTION ABOUT RESTR AIRSPACE DISTR US DURING A CRITICAL PHASE OF FLT WHEN WE WERE RESPONDING TO SEVERAL QUICK CHANGES TO HDG AND COURSE. SINCE THE MIL AIRSPACE WAS NOT IN USE AND WE WERE CLRED THROUGH THE AIRSPACE ON OUR INITIAL CLRNC AND ALSO WITH A CLRNC FROM ZLA; THE QUESTIONING BY SOCAL DEP SEEMED UNNECESSARY AND UNTIMELY. AN INITIAL STATEMENT TO CHK OUR FLT PLANNING WAS APPROPRIATE BUT A CONTINUED DISCUSSION ABOUT THE RESTR AIRSPACE WAS UNNECESSARY.
