C182 PLT DIVERTS TO MMU DUE TO WX; BUT PENETRATES NY ADIZ WITHOUT CLRNC.

Narrative

I AM AN INSTRUMENT RATED PLT BASED OUT OF LDJ; WHICH IS CURRENTLY UNDERNEATH THE NY ADIZ. I HAVE BEEN BASED THERE FOR APPROX 18 MONTHS. ON FRIDAY; I FILED AN INSTRUMENT FLT PLAN FROM LDJ TO CHO AT APPROX XA00 HRS. UPON ARRIVING AT LDJ; AND AFTER HAVING SPOKEN WITH FLT SERVICE AND CHKING CURRENT WX I BECAME AWARE THAT SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WERE QUICKLY FORMING ALONG MY RTE OF FLT. THE WX AT LDJ WAS VMC; WITH APPROX 5 MILES OF VISIBILITY AND A CEILING OF 4000 FT. GIVEN THE CURRENT CONDITIONS AND THE WX ENRTE; I DECIDED THAT I WOULD NOT PICK UP MY INSTRUMENT FLT PLAN FROM LDJ IN ORDER TO AVOID IMBEDDED CELLS WHILE IN IMC ON THE WAY TO CHO. I CHOSE INSTEAD TO TAKE OFF VFR TO THE W AT APPROX XC00 HRS TO DETERMINE IF I WOULD BE ABLE TO GET AROUND THE WX. IN DOING SO; I NEGLECTED TO REFILE A VFR FLT PLAN PER THE TERMS OF THE ADIZ NOTAM. I TRAVELED APPROX 20 MILES W; NEVER ENTERING CLASS B AIRSPACE. I EVENTUALLY DIVERTED DUE TO FORMING STORMS AND LANDED AT MMU; WHICH IS ALSO UNDER THE NY ADIZ; FOLLOWING A CALL TO THE TWR AT MMU INFORMING THEM OF MY INTENTIONS. DURING TAXI TO THE RAMP; THE TWR ASKED ME TO HOLD POSITION; AND GAVE ME A PHONE NUMBER TO CALL DUE TO POSSIBLE PLT DEVIATION DURING MY PREVIOUS FLT. I CALLED THE NUMBER AND RPTED MY INFO TO THE PERSON. I WAS TOLD THAT I MAY BE CONTACTED BY THE FAA; BUT HAVE NOT HEARD ANYTHING. I WOULD LIKE TO POINT OUT THAT THIS DEVIATION DID NOT RISK PUBLIC SAFETY OR RESULT IN ANY PERSONAL OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.
