A FALCON 50 FLT CREW EXPERIENCES AN UNPLANNED RE-ENTRY INTO THE CLASS B AIRSPACE OF SLC; UT.
Narrative
WE APCHED SALT LAKE MUNICIPAL ARPT (SALT LAKE #2); WHICH IS U42. AS WE APCHED U42 FROM THE N; APCH WAS WORKING WITH US AS WE PASSED OVER SLC INTL IN THE SALT LAKE CLASS B AIRSPACE. NEARING THE SOUTHERN EDGE OF THE AIRSPACE WE WERE CLRED FOR A VISUAL APCH TO U42 AND APCH INFORMED US WE WOULD BE CLR OF THE CLASS B AS WE LEFT 6000 FT MSL. AS WE PASSED THROUGH 500 FT; I CANCELED OUR IFR AND WE SET UP FOR A STRAIGHT-IN TO RWY 16 AT U42. AS WE NEARED THE ARPT ANOTHER ACFT WAS DEPARTING 16; SO WE WENT OVERHEAD AND ENTERED THE DOWNWIND TO THE W OF U42. AFTER SOME CONFUSION AS TO WHETHER WE WERE AT THE RIGHT ARPT; WE TURNED BASE AND FINAL FOR RWY 16 AND LANDED UNEVENTFULLY. AFTER LNDG; I LOOKED AT THE IFR AREA CHART CLOSER; AND REALIZED THAT WHILE THE CLASS B FLOOR IS 6000 FT MSL; OVER U42; IT IS DOWN TO THE GND JUST TO THE N AROUND SLC INTL. WE DEPARTED ABOUT 15 MINS LATER AND WORKED WITH SALT LAKE APCH AGAIN AND THEY DID NOT SAY A WORD. AT THE SAME TIME WE WERE CONCERNED THAT OUR APCH MAY HAVE BROUGHT US BACK INTO THE SALT LAKE CLASS B AIRSPACE AS WE FLEW OVER BASE AND FINAL TO RWY 16. AS BEST I CAN REMEMBER WE FLEW ABOUT A 3 - 3 1/2 MI FINAL. THE AREA CHART DOES NOT GIVE ANY DISTANCE INFO ON HOW FAR THE CLASS B AIRSPACE IS TO THE N OF U42. I THINK WE WERE PROBABLY OK; BUT WE HAD TO HAVE BEEN CLOSE TO RE-ENTERING THE CLASS B AIRSPACE. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IF WE HAD REVIEWED THE AREA CHART CLOSER BEFORE APCHING THE ARPT.
