Narrative

KAHALUI COMPANY PLATE NOTATION NEEDS TO ADVISE PLTS THAT THERE IS ADEQUATE TERRAIN CLRNC FROM HALEAKALA VOLCANO WITH ATC; 180 DEG L TURN CLRNC AFTER TKOF FROM RWY 20. L TURN AFTER RWY 29 TKOF SHALLOWED INITIALLY TO GAIN MORE ALT BEFORE TURNING TOWARD HALEAKALA TO INSURE ADEQUATE TERRAIN CLRNC AS ACFT TRAVERSED NW SIDE OF HALEAKALA ON ITS WAY TOWARD THE CLUTS WAYPOINT. NO GUIDANCE (ATC NOR COMPANY PAGE) PROVIDED INDICATING 'CLOSED PATTERN;' 180 DEG L TURN AFTER TKOF WOULD PROVIDE ADEQUATE TERRAIN SEPARATION. WHEN AFTER TKOF; IT WAS APPARENT TO US THAT A SHALLOW TURN WAS NOT NECESSARY; WE ATTEMPTED TO COMPLETE OUR 180 DEG TURN PROMPTLY. THEN IT WAS APPARENT BY THE CTLR'S INFLECTION THAT HE WAS WORRIED ABOUT OUR ACFT'S CLOSE PROX TO THE SIDE OF HALEAKALA. TO ELIMINATE ANY CONCERNS THE CTLR MIGHT HAVE HAD; I CALLED A VISUAL ON HALEAKALA. HAD I KNOWN FROM THE OUTSET THAT A 'CLOSED PATTERN' 180 DEG L TURN AFTER TKOF WOULD PROVIDE ADEQUATE TERRAIN SEPARATION; I WOULD HAVE DIRECTED ONE IMMEDIATELY AFTER TKOF; THEREBY STEMMING ANY CONCERNS REGARDING ADEQUATE TERRAIN CLRNC FROM HALEAKALA.
