Narrative

NIGHT TAXI; N; FROM E RAMP TO RWY 23L. INSTRUCTIONS FROM GND WERE TO 'TAXI N ON TXWY A TO HOLD SHORT RWY 23L.' INSTRUCTIONS WERE READ BACK TO GND. DID NOT SEE HOLD SHORT LINE ON NORTHERN MOST PORTION OF TXWY A AS WE WERE TRAVELING. PROCEEDED TO POINT ON TXWY WHERE HOLD-SHORT LINES NORMALLY POSITIONED (AS IS TYPICAL FOR MIL INSTALLATIONS AND MOST COMMERCIAL AIRFIELDS) AND STOPPED ACFT. ACFT WAS APPROX 100-150 FT FROM RWY 23L RWY EDGE (NORTHERN END); WHEN ACFT WAS STOPPED. INTENT TO HOLD SHORT; AS INSTRUCTED; EXISTED THROUGHOUT ENTIRE TAXI PERIOD. NO ADVISORY OR WARNING RECEIVED FROM GND/TWR UNTIL AFTER WE STOPPED; AT WHICH TIME TWR SAID 'SOMEONE HAS TAXIED WAY PAST THE HOLD SHORT.' ADVISED TWR THAT WE WERE THE ACFT PAST HOLD SHORT. WE DETERMINED THIS SINCE WE WERE THE ONLY ACFT ON THE TXWY. ADVISED TWR WE WERE NOT ON THE RWY; EXPRESSED APOLOGIES; WAITED FOR FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS. SUPPLEMENTAL 577801: TWR THEN WAVED OFF A LIGHT TWIN ON SHORT FINAL. THE TWIN PLT STATED THAT WE WERE CLR OF THE RWY AND REQUESTED TO LAND. TWR TOLD HIM TO CONTINUE THE WAVE OFF. TWR ASKED IF WE WERE READY TO GO OR NEEDED A RUN-UP. WE ADVISED WE WERE READY TO TKOF. TWR CLRED US FOR TKOF RWY 23L; AND WE QUICKLY DID SO. TWR CLRED US FOR SWITCH TO DEP. WHILE UP WITH DEP; THEY ADVISED US TO CALL MCGHEE-TYSON TWR UPON LAND AT DEST. UPON LNDG; CALLED MCGHEE-TYSON TWR. SOME RECOMMENDATIONS: FIELD WAS VFR; NIGHT; BUT THE HOLD SHORT FOR RWY 23L ON TXWY A IS NON-STANDARD; AND LINE IS NOT EASY TO SEE AT NIGHT. HAVE GND ADVISE; IN THEIR TAXI INSTRUCTIONS; THAT HOLD SHORT LINE IS NON-STANDARD AND WELL BEFORE THE RWY THRESHOLD. MARK HOLD-SHORT LINE MORE CONSPICUOUSLY; SUCH AS WITH SEVERAL LINES OF REFLECTIVE PAINT; OR PERHAPS WITH LIGHTS EMBEDDED ACROSS THE TXWY AT THE HOLD SHORT LINE. POST SIGNS ON EACH SIDE OF TXWY; WHERE THE HOLD SHORT LINE IS LOCATED; TO SERVE AS AN ADDITIONAL MEANS OF PLT NOTIFICATION (USE REFLECTIVE PAINT OR POST LIGHTED SIGNS).
