FLT CREW OF B777 CROSSED W1 HOLD LINE AT EDDF WITHOUT CLRNC.

Narrative

PARKED ON CARGO RAMP AT EDDF. OUR CLRNC WAS A SID USING RWY 7; BUT RAMP CTL TOLD US TO PUSH BACK AND FACE W. WHEN WE CALLED FOR TAXI; THE MPM CTLR ADMITTED HIS MISTAKE; BUT TOLD US TO TAXI FORWARD AND CALL GND. GND TOLD US TO TAXI TO TXWY A AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 18. HE THEN CLRED US TO CROSS RWY 18 AND TAXI VIA TXWY A AND TXWY L TO RWY 7L. AS WE CROSSED RWY 18; THE GND CTLR SAID HE NOW WANTED US TO TURN R ONTO TXWY W AND HOLD SHORT OF W1. I TURNED; AND AS I WAS TRYING TO DETERMINE WHERE TXWY W1 WAS; THE GND CTLR SAID SOMETHING TO THE EFFECT OF 'STOP TAXI' AND 'STOP.' HE THEN TOLD US TO CONTINUE VIA TXWY W TO RWY 7R AFTER THE TFC LNDG RWY 7L. I THEN REALIZED THAT W1 WAS A STOP LINE AND NOT A TXWY. HE ASKED US IF WE WERE PAST W1; AND I TOLD HIM THAT WE DID NOT SEE IT. AS WE CONTINUED TAXI; WE DID SEE SOME YELLOW LINES MARKING A STOP LINE GOING IN THE OTHER DIRECTION. I AM SURE THAT SOME PORTION OF THE ACFT WAS PAST THE STOP LINE AS THE ACFT LANDED ON RWY 7L; SO WE WERE SLIGHTLY IN THE PATH OF THE LNDG ACFT. AFTER WE ADMITTED OUR MISTAKE; THE GND CTLR SEEMED TO BE SATISFIED; SO I DON'T THINK HE TOOK ANY FURTHER ACTION. THE RAPIDLY CHANGING TAXI INSTRUCTIONS GOT ME INTO A SIT WHERE I WAS NOT COMPLETELY PREPARED TO BE; AND WE CROSSED THE STOP LINE BEFORE WE KNEW WHAT WE WERE LOOKING FOR. HIS PHRASEOLOGY DIDN'T HELP US UNDERSTAND WHAT WE WERE LOOKING FOR. ALSO; THE STOP LINE NAME AND LINES THEMSELVES WERE PAINTED ON THE GND IN FADING YELLOW PAINT; NOT REMARKABLE AT ALL. THE LINE IS MARKED ON THE TAXI DIAGRAM WE HAD OUT; BUT SINCE WE DID NOT ANTICIPATE GOING THAT WAY; WE HAD NO REASON TO REVIEW THAT TAXI RTE IN ADVANCE. THERE WAS NO HARM; BUT TECHNICALLY; THERE WAS A MISTAKE.
