MD80 FLT CREW EVACUATES THE ACFT DUE TO SMOKE AND FUMES AT DFW.
Narrative
I WAS THE FO ON FLT FROM BNA TO DFW. THIS WAS OUR SECOND LEG OF THE SEQUENCE WITH THIS ACFT. AFTER AN UNEVENTFUL FLT; WE WERE CLRED TO LAND ON RWY 17L. WE THEN EXITED ONTO 'ER' AND RECEIVED CLRNC TO CROSS RWY 17C WITH A R TURN ON TXWY M AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 17R AT 'EL.' I ACCOMPLISHED THE AFTER LNDG CHKLIST; STARTED THE APU IN ANTICIPATION OF SHUTTING DOWN AN ENG; AND CALLED THE COMPANY SHORTLY AFTER EXITING RWY 17L. AFTER XING RWY 17C AND TURNING ONTO TXWY M; BOTH CAPT AND I NOTED A 'DIRTY SOCK' TYPE SMELL. WE AGREED THAT THE SMELL RESEMBLED THAT OF A DIRTY WATER SEPARATOR. SHORTLY THEREAFTER; ONE OF THE FLT ATTENDANTS IN THE BACK CALLED UP TO THE #1 FLT ATTENDANT AND ASKED IF HE SMELLED ANYTHING. THE #1 FLT ATTENDANT THEN CALLED ME; AND I STATED THAT WE HAD NOTICED THE SMELL AND IT RESEMBLED THAT OF A DIRTY WATER SEPARATOR. THE #1 FLT ATTENDANT THEN STATED THAT HE THOUGHT THE SMELL COULD BE ELECTRICAL IN NATURE AND THEN COMPARED THE ODOR TO THAT OF A VACUUM CLEANER. AS I WAS RELAYING THIS INFO TO THE CAPT; A DEADHEADING CAPT CAME ON THE REAR INTERPHONE AND STATED WHO HE WAS AND THAT WE HAD LIGHT SMOKE IN THE CABIN. FLYING CAPT THEN SWITCHED THE RECIRCULATING FAN AND THE AIR CONDITIONING SWITCHES TO THE 'OFF' POS. HE REQUESTED THAT I CONTACT ANOTHER CAPT WHO WAS DEADHEADING IN FIRST CLASS. DEADHEADING CAPT CONFIRMED OVER THE INTERPHONE THAT THERE WAS SMOKE IN THE CABIN AND THAT THE SMOKE WAS INCREASING IN INTENSITY. FLYING CAPT ORDERED THE EVAC OF THE ACFT. I PROCEEDED TO CALL DFW TWR AND DECLARED AN EMER; AND ORDERED CFR. WE THEN COMPLETED THE EVAC CHKLIST. I EXITED THE ACFT WITH FIRE EXTINGUISHER AND PBE IN HAND TO ATTEND TO THE SAFETY OF THE PAX.
