POTENTIAL CONFLICT OCCURS WHEN A DEP C172 TAKES THE RWY ON HIS TKOF ROLL AS A LNDG CORPORATE JET IS ON ABOUT A 1 MI FINAL AT HXD; SC.

Narrative

MY FRIEND; A PVT PLT; WAS IN THE L SEAT; AND I; AN INST-RATED PVT PLT; WAS IN THE R SEAT AS PIC. MY FRIEND WAS 'FLYING;' THOUGH THIS OCCURRENCE ORIGINATED ON THE GND. WE RECEIVED OUR IFR CLRNC FROM SAVANNAH CLRNC DELIVERY. WE THEN CHANGED TO CTAF AT HXD; AND ANNOUNCED WE WERE TAXIING TO RWY 3. WHEN AT THE HOLD-SHORT LINE AND #1 FOR DEP; WE CONTACTED CLRNC AGAIN; AS INITIALLY INSTRUCTED BY THE CTLR. WE RECALL THE CTLR INFORMING US OF A JET ON FINAL; AND HE SAID WE COULD DEPART AFTER IT LANDED. WE CHANGED BACK TO CTAF AND ANNOUNCED WE WERE TAKING RWY 3. AS WE TAXIED FROM THE HOLD-SHORT LINE; GOT ON THE CTRLINE; AND WERE ROLLING DOWN THE RWY; ANOTHER JET RPTED A 1-MI FINAL AND SUGGESTED WE ABORT THE TKOF AND EXIT THE RWY IMMEDIATELY. WE DECIDED TO CONTINUE THE TKOF; AS THERE IS NO HIGH-SPD TXWY AT HXD; AND SLOWING DOWN TO EXIT THE RWY WOULD HAVE INCREASED THE CLOSURE WITH THE FAST-MOVING JET. WHEN WE WERE JUST AIRBORNE; I RECALL THE JET BEING ABOUT OVER THE THRESHOLD. WHEN WE WERE ALMOST OVER THE THRESHOLD AT THE OPPOSITE END OF THE RWY; ABOUT 300 FT AGL; I LOOKED DOWN AND SAW THE JET ON ITS LNDG ROLLOUT; JUST BEHIND AND BELOW THE R WING. SAVANNAH CLRNC DID NOT MENTION 2 JETS; THAT WE RECALL. FROM THAT POINT; ALL PROCEEDED UNEVENTFULLY. AS FAR AS WHAT MY FRIEND AND I SHOULD HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY; WE SHOULD HAVE CLRED FINAL MORE CAREFULLY. MY FRIEND SAID HE GLANCED AT FINAL AND SHOULD HAVE LOOKED MORE CLOSELY. I RECALL ONLY GLANCING MYSELF; BECAUSE HE WAS 'FLYING;' AND ALSO; PERHAPS THOUGHT THE ONLY PLANE IN THE PATTERN WAS THE JET THAT JUST LANDED BEFORE WE DEPARTED. ALSO; BECAUSE WE HAD BEEN MONITORING ONLY THE CLRNC FREQ; WE SHOULD HAVE MONITORED CTAF LONGER FOR A CALL FROM ANOTHER PLANE OR REQUESTED ANY TFC; PLEASE ADVISE. PERHAPS THE CTLR HAD BEEN REFERRING TO THE SECOND JET AND NOT THE FIRST ONE. WE DID NOT QUESTION THE CTLR AFTER THE OCCURRENCE; BUT SHOULD HAVE. ALSO; THE PLT FROM THE JET COULD HAVE NOTIFIED US THAT HE WAS ON FINAL AS WE ANNOUNCED WE WERE TAKING THE RWY; INSTEAD OF WHEN WE WERE ON OUR ROLL. HE COULD HAVE EXECUTED A GAR IF HE NEEDED TO. MY FRIEND AND I CERTAINLY LEARNED FROM THIS SCENARIO.
