NAVION PLT HAS OIL LEAK AND IS FORCED TO MAKE AN OFF FIELD LNDG.

NAVION PLT HAS OIL LEAK AND IS FORCED TO MAKE AN OFF FIELD LNDG.

Narrative

UPON THE SHOWING OF A SMALL SPATTERING OF OIL ON THE WINDSHIELD I INFORMED GRAY APCH THAT I HAD A PROB AND THAT I WAS RETURNING TO BURNET. WITHIN MOMENTS THE WINDSHIELD WAS COMPLETELY COVERED BY A THICK FILM OF OIL AND COMPLETELY OBSCURED. I INFORMED GRAY THAT I WAS MAKING AN OFF FIELD LNDG. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED THE PROP LEVER OUT TO FULL PITCH TO SHUT OFF THE OIL TO THE PROP GOVERNOR AS CALLED FOR IN THE OPERATING HANDBOOK. NEXT I SURVEYED THE AREA AND SELECTED A PLACE TO LAND. I MADE A L CIRCLING APCH TO KEEP THE SITE IN VIEW AS LONG AS POSSIBLE. USING SIDE VISION I MADE A SOFT LNDG AND APPLIED ALL THE BRAKING ACTION AVAILABLE. I DID NOT FEEL THE R FLAP IMPACT A FENCE POST. NO ONE WAS HURT. DAMAGE TO THE AIRPLANE WAS MINIMAL. IN THE 2 MINS OR LESS THAT THIS TOOK PLACE THE ENG LOST 3 OF 7 QUARTS OF OIL. THE CAUSE OF THE PROB TURNED OUT TO BE THE CONNECTION OF THE OIL SYS TO THE PROP GOVERNOR. THE 2 BOLTS HOLDING THE OIL LINE FITTING TO THE BACK OF THE GOVERNOR HAD BACKED OFF SLIGHTLY AND ALLOWED THE SEAL TO FAIL.
