THE TRPIC 2 DEP FROM ORLANDO; FL; IS FLOWN WITH A TRANSITION NOT EXPECTED BY THE DEP CTLR.

Narrative

I BELIEVE THAT THE TRPIC 2 DEP (TRP2.TRP) AT ORL IS CONFUSING AND AMBIGUOUS. WE WERE CLRED FOR THIS DEP FROM RWY 25 TO BE VECTORED TO PICKUP J53 TO CRAIG. OUR COURSE WAS CLRLY N; SO WE FOLLOWED THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE NW DEP RWY 25. NO OTHER INSTRUCTIONS ON THE PLATE REFERRED TO RWY 25. WHEN AIRBORNE; ATC QUERIED US WHAT DEP WE WERE FLYING; AND INSINUATED THAT WE SHOULD BE FLYING THE SW DEP. THE ALT FOR BOTH DEPS IS THE SAME; BUT ONE CALLS FOR A 290 DEG HDG AND THE OTHER CALLS FOR A 250 DEG HDG. THERE ARE MANY FLAWS OF LOGIC AND STANDARDIZATION ON THIS PLATE. 1) PICTORIAL ONLY SHOWS THE NW DEP (A 290 DEG HDG). 2) THE DEP FREQS ARE NOT QUADRANT SPECIFIC; AS THEY ARE WITH EVERY OTHER PLATE. IT IS COUNTER INTUITIVE TO USE THE 'SW DEP' WHEN ONE IS DEPARTING 'NW ON RWY 25.' THIS MUST LEAD TO SO MUCH CONFUSION; ESPECIALLY WHEN A PLT HAS THE AWARENESS THAT THE MASSIVE MCO (ORLANDO INTL) LIES JUST S; AND THE PURPOSE OF THE ORL DEP PROCS IS TO KEEP DEPARTING TFC FROM GOING S OR TOO HIGH. I RECOMMEND THAT THE GOVERNING AUTHS REVISE THIS DEP TO CLR UP THE AMBIGUITIES.
