BD-4 PLT ATTEMPTS A XWIND LNDG; WHICH RESULTED IN A GEAR COLLAPSE AND PROP STRIKING THE RWY AT CVN.
Narrative
I WAS ENRTE FROM CEZ TO CVN ON A PLEASURE TRIP TO SEE MY PARENTS; WHO LIVE NEAR SEP. AT APPROX XA00; TUNED TO AWOS AND WIND WAS RPTED 17 KTS GUSTING TO 24 KTS AT 350 DEGS. I WAS FLYING AN EXPERIMENTAL CONVENTIONAL GEAR BD-4. THE WIND WAS 50 DEGS OFF OF RWY 4 OR RWY 30. I USED RWY 30; BECAUSE IT WAS THE WIDEST. I CAME IN WITH THE R WING HELD DOWN AND SET THE R WHEEL DOWN. AS THE ACFT SLOWED AND STARTED TO SETTLE ON TO BOTH GEAR; THE WIND PICKED UP THE R WING. WHEN THIS HAPPENED; I APPLIED FULL PWR; AND ACFT CAME UP SEVERAL FT. THEN ACFT DROPPED ONTO R GEAR. THE BOX WHERE GEAR LEG ATTACHES FAILED AND LET PROP HIT RWY. AT THIS POINT; I WAS ABLE TO GET THE ACFT BACK INTO THE AIR ABOUT 3 FT. I FLEW IT OVER TO THE SIDE OF RWY AND LANDED IN THE GRASS. THE FIBERGLASS WINGTIP WAS DISTORTED; BUT DID NOT EVEN KNOCK OFF THE NAV LIGHT. I BELIEVE I HIT A SWIRL OF TURB; WHICH CAUSED THE ACFT TO LIFT THEN DROP. THIS SIDE-LOADED THE GEAR; AND CAUSED FAILURE. IN RETROSPECT; I SHOULD HAVE FLOWN TO A RWY WHERE WIND WAS MORE DOWN THE RWY.
