A VERY LOW TIME CFI RPTED VIOLATING THE BWI ADIZ WHILE FLYING IN THE PATTERN AT JYO.
Narrative
JYO LEESBURG ARPT LIES WITHIN THE ADIZ AIRSPACE OF THE WASHINGTON/BALTIMORE AREA. CURRENTLY; AS PER NOTAMS; A DISCRETE XPONDER CODE IS REQUIRED FOR ALL ACFT INSIDE THE ADIZ; EVEN IF NOT IN CLASS B AIRSPACE. ON APR/WED/03 MY STUDENT AND I FINISHED OUR RUNUP ON THE C172 AND RECEIVED OUR XPONDER CODE. ON THIS FLT; POTOMAC CLRNC DELIVERY DID NOT GIVE US A DEP FREQ LIKE THEY USUALLY DO FOR THE ADIZ FLTS AND MY STUDENT AND I DISCUSSED THAT FOR SEVERAL MINS. IN RETROSPECT; WE WERE DISTR FROM THE FINAL FEW ITEMS ON THE CHKLIST BY THIS DISCUSSION AND WE DEPARTED FOR OUR PATTERN WORK WITHOUT THE XPONDER TURNED TO THE 'ALT' MODE. WE STAYED IN THE TFC PATTERN ONLY AND CERTAINLY DID NOT INTEND TO ENTER INTO THE ADIZ WITHOUT THE REQUIRED AUTH. ENTRY INTO THE ADIZ WAS DONE ONCE WE LEFT THE GND. WE DID NOT; HOWEVER; ENTER CLASS B AIRSPACE. WE RECEIVED A RADIO CALL FROM OUR LEESBURG UNICOM MGR WHO GAVE US A PHONE NUMBER FOR THE POTOMAC APCH FACILITY. UPON RECEIVING THIS INFO WE IMMEDIATELY LANDED AND I CALLED THE FACILITY. I EXPLAINED THE SIT TO HIM; THAT WE HAD MISSED PART OF THE CHKLIST; AND UNINTENTIONALLY DEPARTED WITH THE XPONDER IN STANDBY POS. THE CTLR ADMONISHED ME FOR THE INCIDENT AND TOLD ME HE WASN'T GOING TO WRITE A RPT ON IT. I UNDERSTAND THE CURRENT NATIONAL SIT THAT HAS PLACED THESE RESTRS ON THE WASHINGTON/BALTIMORE AIRSPACE. IT WAS MY RESPONSIBILITY; AS CFI; TO MAKE SURE THAT ALL CHKLISTS WERE PROPERLY COMPLETED. I MISSED THE FACT THAT; WHILE ANSWERING A STUDENT'S QUESTION; IT WASN'T DONE. IN THE FUTURE; I WILL RE-DOUBLE MY EFFORTS TO MAKE SURE A DISTR DURING INSTRUCTION DOESN'T ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN AGAIN.
