A C560 FLT CREW LOOSES THEIR POSITIONAL AWARENESS AND LANDS AT WRONG ARPT.

Narrative

AS ACTING FO I FLEW THIS FAR 91 LEG FROM THE R SEAT. THE WX WAS DAY VFR WITH BETTER THAN 10 MI VISIBILITY. WE THOUGHT WE HAD A VISUAL ON TYQ. WE THEREFORE INFORMED ATC WHO INSTRUCTED US TO STAY TO THE E FOR THE VISUAL TO RWY 18 DUE TO TFC OBSERVED. WE CANCELED IFR AND CONTACTED TYQ'S TFC. WE HAD IN FACT SELECTED INDIANAPOLIS METROPOLITAN (UMP) IN ERROR. BOTH ARPTS HAD CTAF'S AND WERE NEXT TO EACH OTHER IN CLASS E AIRSPACE. I FLEW TOWARD THE NE OF THE FIELD AND SLOWED TO FLAP SPD THEN CALLED FOR 15 DEGS OF FLAP. ON THE CTAF WE HEARD THERE WAS TFC ON THE L DOWNWIND FOR RWY 36. WE THEREFORE FLEW A XWIND OVER THE FIELD ANNOUNCING OUR INTENTIONS OF ENTERING THE PATTERN FOR RWY 36. WE WERE BUSY LOOKING FOR LIGHT ACFT ON THE DOWNWIND. I HEARD A LIGHT ACFT ANNOUNCE HE WAS LEAVING THE PATTERN TO THE S. I SPOTTED AN ACFT AT THE R POS IN RELATION TO THE ARPT LEAVING THE DOWNWIND IN THAT DIRECTION. PERHAPS DUE TO THIS ADDED WORKLOAD I DID NOT REALIZE FLYING A L DOWNWIND THAT THE DEST WAS ACTUALLY 12 MI AWAY. I ALSO FAILED TO REALIZE THE RWY WAS NOT ALIGNED TO RWY 36/18 (TYQ) BY RWY 33/15 (UMP) INSTEAD. WE FLEW THE PATTERN AND LANDED. AFTERWARD WE REALIZED OUR DISTANCE FROM OUR DEST. WE REGROUPED AT THAT POINT AND PREPARED FOR THE SHORT TRIP TO TYQ. UPON REACHING TYQ WE APOLOGIZED FOR THE ERROR TO THE PAX. THE CAPT THEN INFORMED THE DUTY PROGRAM MGR AT COMPANY OF THESE EVENTS. I AM VERY EMBARRASSED AT THE ABOVE EVENTS. HOWEVER; I FULLY INTEND TO LEARN FROM THE EXPERIENCE AND BECOME A BETTER PLT AS A RESULT. COMPANY IS PLANNING TO DEBRIEF AND 'RETRAIN' US AT THEIR HEADQUARTERS.
