FLT CREW OF B732 FAILED TO REVIEW NOTAMS FOR LBB AND NEARLY ELECTED TO LAND ON A RWY 50% OF WHICH WAS CLOSED. ALERT APCH CTLR ADVISED THEM AND ANOTHER RWY WAS SELECTED.

Narrative

RUNNING BEHIND SCHEDULE DUE TO WX 2 LEGS PRIOR. PUSHED 25 MIN LATE. PICKED UP LBB ATIS 120 NM E OF LBB. I DID NOT RECALL HEARING THAT RWY 35L WAS SHORTENED 5500 FT AT N END. MORE THAN LIKELY; I DID NOT LISTEN TO THE COMPLETE ATIS WHERE THIS RWY LENGTH CHANGE WAS INCLUDED. ATIS WAS ADVERTISING RNAV 08 APCHS IN USE. HANDED OFF TO LBB APCH; ADVISED THEM WE WERE UNABLE RNAV 8; AND REQUESTED LOC BACK COURSE RWY 35L. WIND WAS 060 DEGS AT 11 KTS. APCH REPLIED; ASKING US IF WE STILL WANTED RWY 35L WITH ITS SHORTENED LENGTH. WE TOLD THEM TO STAND BY WHILE WE GOT THE NEW ATIS.' NEW ATIS ADVISED THAT RWY 35L WAS SHORTENED 5500 FT AT THE N END; APPROX 5800 FT USABLE RWY AVAILABLE. WE INITIALLY REQUESTED THE VOR-A TO RWY 08; BUT AFTER REVIEWING LNDG DATA AGAIN; REQUESTED ILS 26 APCH. VECTORED FOR ILS 26; NORMAL APCH; LNDG; TAXI-IN. RUNNING BEHIND SCHEDULE; OUR REVIEW OF NOTAMS IN THE WX PACKAGE WAS NOT AS THOROUGH AS IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN PRIOR TO PUSHING. A HEADS-UP APCH CTLR AT LBB APCH QUESTIONING OUR SELECTION OF RWY 35L HELPED AVOID A POSSIBLY DANGEROUS SIT. THE INCREASING INCLUSION OF NUMEROUS MUNDANE ADMINISTRATIVE ITEMS ON ATIS BROADCASTS HAS LED ME TO NOT LISTEN AS CLOSELY AS I SHOULD AFTER GETTING THE WX INFO.
