PLT OF MD10 FEELS UNTIMELY CLRNCS FROM GND CTLR RESULTED IN A RWY INCURSION ACROSS HOLD SHORT LINE OF RWY 8L AT ATL.

Narrative

OUR TAXI CLRNC WAS TO TAXI UP TO AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 8L ON TXWY A AT TXWY C. CLRNC WAS ACKNOWLEDGED AND READ BACK. APPROX 150 FT E OF TXWY C ON TXWY A; ATL GND CTL TOLD US 'CHANGING TO PLAN B; EXPEDITE YOUR TAXI; CROSS RWY 8L AT TXWY C; TFC AT THE MARKER.' WE ACKNOWLEDGED THE CLRNC TO CROSS RWY 8L AT TXWY C; AND I CONFIRMED THE CLRNC WITH THE FO WHO CONCURRED. APPROX HALFWAY THROUGH THE TURN ONTO TXWY C; ATL GND CTL TOLD US TO 'HOLD SHORT OF RWY 8L AT TXWY C; LNDG TFC.' I BROUGHT THE ACFT TO AN EMER STOP; IN THE TURN; AND I INFORMED GND CTL THAT WE HAD CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE ON TXWY C AND WE WERE STOPPED BUT NOT ON RWY 8L. GND CTL ACKNOWLEDGED; BUT GAVE NO FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS; NOR DID THEY INQUIRE IF ANY PART OF OUR ACFT MIGHT POSE AN OBSTRUCTION TO LNDG ACFT. APPROX 10 SECONDS LATER; OUT OF THE FOG; AN ACFT LANDED ON RWY 8L. ATL GND CTL THEN GAVE US; AND WE ACKNOWLEDGED; TAXI CLRNC TO 'CROSS RWY 8L AT TXWY C AND CROSS RWY 8R; TURN R AT TXWY E ON THE OTHER SIDE.' NO FURTHER CONFLICTS OCCURRED AND THE REMAINDER OF THE FLT WAS UNEVENTFUL. VISIBILITY WAS RESTR; 4500 FT RVR; WHICH MAY HAVE CAUSED SOME CONFUSION FOR THE GND CTLR. HOWEVER; THE ISSUANCE OF A CLRNC TO CROSS IN AN 'EXPEDITED' MANNER; AND THE ENSUING CLRNC TO HOLD SHORT IN THE TURN; GIVEN TO US AT THE LAST MOMENT; POSED A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SIT FOR BOTH ACFT. ADDITIONALLY; THE CTLR NEVER QUERIED US AS TO HOW FAR ACROSS THE HOLD SHORT LINE OUR ACFT WAS THEREFORE; POSING POTENTIAL CONFLICT FOR THE LNDG ACFT. THE LNDG ACFT DID NOT EXECUTE A GAR. THE HOLD SHORT LINE I ESTIMATED WAS BISECTING OUR ACFT.
