DURING TKOF ROLL AT ORD; HS-25 CREW OBSERVE AN MD-80 TURN BACK ONTO THE RWY AFTER IT HAD TURNED OFF.

Narrative

AT APPROX XA50Z ON JUL/TUE/03 AT CHICAGO O'HARE ARPT (KORD); OUR ACFT WAS INSTRUCTED TO TAXI FROM FBO TO RWY 14L AT TXWY V AND HOLD SHORT. WHEN WE STARTED OUR TAXI FROM THE FBO; WE INADVERTENTLY TURNED L ONTO TXWY V1 INSTEAD OF TURNING R ONTO TXWY V1 TO TXWY V. WHEN WE REALIZED WHAT WE HAD DONE; WE IMMEDIATELY STOPPED AND ADVISED ATC WHAT HAD HAPPENED. THE GND CTLR WAS VERY BUSY WITH OTHER TFC ON OTHER PARTS OF THE ARPT AND BECAME VERY DISGRUNTLED WHEN HE CALLED US BACK TO TURN AROUND. AT ANY TIME DURING THIS EVENT THERE WAS NOT ANY CONFLICT WITH ANY OTHER ACFT OR AUTO AND WE DID NOT TAXI ONTO ANY ACTIVE RWYS. AFTER OUR ACFT TAXIED TO RWY 14L AT TXWY V; WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO CONTACT TWR CTL FOR THE REMAINDER OF OUR TAXI AND TKOF INSTRUCTIONS. TWR CTL TOLD US TO TAXI ONTO RWY 18/36 TO TXWY H AND TAXI TO RWY 9L. AFTER REACHING RWY 9L; WE WERE CLRED INTO POS AND HOLD. BOTH PLTS IN OUR COCKPIT SAW AN MD80 ACFT THAT LANDED JUST PRIOR TO OUR TAKING THE ACTIVE RWY AND TURNED OFF ONTO A HIGH SPD TXWY P; OFF RWY 9L. AT THE SAME TIME WE RECEIVED A CLRNC FOR IMMEDIATE TKOF AND TO FLY THE RWY HDG. WE ACKNOWLEDGED AND STARTED OUR TKOF ROLL AND AT APPROX 80 KIAS BOTH PLTS NOTICE THE MD80 ACFT RETURN TO THE ACTIVE RWY OF 9L. AT THIS TIME BOTH PLTS PERFORMED AN ABORT PROC AND SIMULTANEOUSLY THE TWR SHOUTED TO ALL ACFT TO STOP AND CANCELLED ALL TKOF CLRNCS. WE TURNED OFF THE RWY AT TXWY H1 AT APPROX THE HALF WAY POINT ON THE RWY AND WAS INSTRUCTED TO TAXI BACK TO RWY 9L ON TXWY H AND HOLD SHORT OF TXWY E. AT NO TIME DID ANY ACFT COME CLOSER THAN APPROX 4000 FT APART THROUGOUT THE EVENT. I CALLED THE TWR AFTER OUR UNEVENTFUL FLT AND TALKED TO THE TWR CAB SUPVR AND HE TOLD ME THAT THE INCIDENT WAS UNDER INVESTIGATION AND THAT IT APPEARED TO BE A MISTAKE ON THE CTLR'S SIDE. I NOTICED THAT AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT AIR AND GND TFC WERE EXTREMELY BUSY. RADIO FREQS WERE NON-STOP WITH ACTIVITY BTWN PLTS AND CTLRS. THIS IS A VERY LARGE ARPT WITH MANY ACFT ON THE GND AND AIR TO BE WATCHED AND GUIDED. I SEE THAT ALL THESE FACTORS LED TO THE ABOVE INICIDENT.
