Narrative
MY CREW AND I WERE RETURNING BACK TO HOME BASE AFTER DROPPING OFF A PATIENT AT A HOSPITAL. ABOUT 5 NM N OF ZZZ AT 1700 FT MSL; I LOOKED UP FROM THE INST PANEL AND SAW A RED AND WHITE HIGH WING TAIL DRAGGER AIRPLANE AT AROUND 100 FT IN FRONT OF ME HEADED IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. I CLBED AND TURNED HARD R AVOIDING THE ACFT. I THINK THE ACFT MAY HAVE COME WITHIN 50 FT OF US. I DON'T BELIEVE HE SAW US SINCE I DIDN'T SEE HIM TAKE ANY EVASIVE ACTION. BEFORE THE INCIDENT; I MADE A POS RPT ON CTAF AT ABOUT 5 NM N. I HAD BOTH RED ANTI-COLLISION AND WHITE STROBE LIGHTS TURNED ON. I ALSO HAD MY LNDG LIGHT ON. I NEVER HEARD ANY RADIO CALLS ON THE CTAF. I HAD GLANCED DOWN AT THE INST PANEL TO SEE IF MY GPS HAD CAPTURED ON MY DESIRED COURSE; WHEN I LOOKED BACK UP; I SAW THE ACFT. I WAS SCANNING OUTSIDE FOR TFC DURING TKOF; CLB; AND CRUISE; BUT SOMEHOW I DIDN'T SEE THIS ACFT TILL IT WAS ALMOST TOO LATE. I WILL ATTEMPT TO BE EVEN MORE VIGILANT IN THE FUTURE. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THIS CONVERGING ACFT WAS BEHIND THE WINDSCREEN CTR PILLAR WHILE I WAS LOOKING OUTSIDE. WHEN I LOOKED BACK UP FROM THE PANEL HE WAS ALMOST UPON US. IN THE FUTURE I'LL MOVE MY HEAD AROUND MORE IN AN ATTEMPT TO ELIMINATE ANY BLIND SPOTS.
