AN MD80 FLT CREW IS NEW TO AN ACFT WITH DIFFERENCES THAT THEY HAVE RECEIVED TRAINING ON; AND MISREAD THE PDC CLRNC.

Narrative

FLYING OUT OF STL FOR FIRST TIME IN EX-ACR Y; MD80. ARRIVED AT GATE MORE THAN 1 HR BEFORE DEP. HAVING TRAINED AT THE SCHOOL HOUSE IN OCT/XA/02; ON ACFT DIFFERENCES; REVIEWED ALL POSSIBLE DIFFERENT MATERIAL PRIOR TO TRIP. THE ACFT IS QUITE DIFFERENT THAN OTHER MD80'S. I DID THE PREFLT; PROGRAMMED THE FMS AND SET UP THE COCKPIT; THE CAPT SHOWED UP WITH THE PAPERWORK; BRIEFED THE FLT ATTENDANTS AND WE BEGAN TO FAMILIARIZE OURSELVES WITH THE SWITCHES AND COCKPIT LAYOUT. WE HAD A JUMPSEATER FROM THE B757 -- NO HELP. THE CHKLIST READING; TAXI-OUT AND TKOF WAS UNEVENTFUL. WE SET OUT ON THE OZARK DEP; HLV TRANSITION; AS WE THOUGHT WE WERE CLRED. DEP CTL SWITCHED US TO ZKC. WE CHKED ON AND THE CTLR ASKED IF WE WERE TURNING TO THE R TO JOIN THE TRANSITION. WE THEN REALIZED THERE WAS A REVISED SEGMENT ON THE PDC AND WE DID NOT CATCH IT. ATC THEN CLRED US R TURN DIRECT MCM AND NOTHING MORE WAS SAID. IT WAS AN ERROR ON BOTH OUR PARTS. WE THOUGHT WE HAD GIVEN OURSELVES PLENTY OF TIME TO ADJUST TO OUR NEW ENVIRONMENT. AN UNFAMILIAR ACFT; FMS; STL OPS; ETC; ALL CONTRIBUTED TO FEELING RUSHED AND WE MISSED A SIMPLE REROUTE. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 587613: FAILED TO INPUT INTO FMC. THIS WAS BOTH OF OUR ERRORS; BUT A SIGNIFICANT PROB WAS LACK OF FAMILIARIZATION WITH THE NEW FMC; ETC. NO EXCUSES FOR MISSED ATC REROUTE; BUT IT WOULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED ON A REGULAR PLANE.
