Narrative
I WAS FLYING FROM SUMTER; SC; TO COLUMBIA METRO. JUST AFTER TKOF FROM SUMTER; I CONTACTED SHAW AFB APCH; TOLD THE CTLR THAT I WAS GOING TO COLUMBIA METRO; AND GOT FLT FOLLOWING. BTWN SHAW CLASS C AIRSPACE AND COLUMBIA CLASS C AIRSPACE EXISTS MCENTIRE ANGS CLASS D AIRSPACE. I KNEW THAT AN ACFT MUST MAINTAIN 2-WAY RADIO COMS WITH THE ATC. I WAS UNSURE WHERE 'THE ATC FACILITY HAVING JURISDICTION OVER THAT AREA' IS DEFINED? I ASSUMED (PERHAPS ERRONEOUSLY) THAT SINCE I WAS RECEIVING FLT FOLLOWING FROM THE SHAW APCH CTLR THAT I SHOULD BE OK. IF 2-WAY COM WITH SHAW APCH WAS SUFFICIENT; THEN I WAS CERTAINLY OK TO ENTER MCENTIRE AIRSPACE. IF I NEEDED TO TALK WITH MCENTIRE TWR; THEN THE SHAW APCH CTLR WOULD TELL ME TO CONTACT THEM. THE SHAW APCH CTLR DID NOT SOUND BUSY AT THE TIME. I WAS FLYING A STRAIGHT AND LEVEL PATCH DIRECTLY THROUGH MCENTIRE AIRSPACE AT 2500 FT MSL. AFTER I GOT IN THE MIDDLE OF MCENTIRE CLASS D AIRSPACE; SHAW APCH INSTRUCTED ME 'RADAR SVCS TERMINATED; SQUAWK VFR; FOR FURTHER FLT FOLLOWING SUGGEST YOU CONTACT COLUMBIA APCH ON 133.4.' I DID AS HE SUGGESTED AND CONTACTED COLUMBIA APCH. MY CONCERN IS THAT I MIGHT NOT HAVE HAD THE 2-WAY COM REQUIRED FOR CLASS D AIRSPACE OP. I FEEL THAT THE FAA NEEDS TO SOMEHOW (IN THE FARS OR CHARTS OR SOMETHING) MAKE IT CLRER WHICH ATC'S HAVE JURISDICTION OVER WHICH AIRSPACE; FOR IT WAS HONESTLY NOT CLR TO ME THAT THE SHAW APCH DOES NOT HAVE SHARED JURISDICTION OVER THE MCENTIRE CLASS D AIRSPACE. ALSO; IT WOULD BE HELPFUL IF THE CTLR PROVIDING FLT FOLLOWING WOULD SUGGEST CONTACTING THE CTLR PRIOR TO ENTRY INTO CLASS D AIRSPACE. THEN; WHAT ABOUT THE SHORT PERIOD OF TIME BTWN WHEN I QUIT TALKING TO THE SHAW APCH CTLR AND WHEN I ESTABLISHED CONTACT WITH THE COLUMBIA APCH CTLR? IT DOESN'T SEEM LIKE I MAINTAINED 2-WAY COM WITH ANY CTLR. I EXPECTED A HDOF OR THAT SHAW APCH WOULD MAINTAIN 2-WAY COM WITH ME UNTIL I EXITED MCENTIRE AIRSPACE.
