A B737 FLT CREW MAY HAVE NOT MET A XING RESTR ON APCH DUE TO NOT RUNNING A CHKLIST IN TIME.

Narrative

FLT WAS ON CUGAR ARR FOR ILS RWY 26 AT IAH. FO WAS FAIRLY NEW ON ACFT AND HAD NOT CALLED FOR APCH CHKLIST ABEAM ARPT; SO I DID FLOW AND SAID 'IDENTED' WHICH USUALLY PROMPTS PLT MONITORING TO INITIATE APCH CHKLIST. I WAITED ANOTHER MIN AND SAID 'IDENTED' AGAIN WITH NO ANSWER. I DECIDED TO LET HIM SEE HOW A LATE CHKLIST WOULD RUSH US AT LAST MIN; BUT SINCE WX WAS GOOD I FIGURED IT WOULD BE A LESSON LEARNED. BIG MISTAKE! IT DID END UP RUSHING US ON BASE LEG. I WAS BUSY WITH CHKLIST AND THOUGHT HE WAS DOING A DIRECT INTERCEPT ON FMC; BUT HE DID NOT. AND BEING IN A NON-EFIS ACFT; THERE WAS NO MAP TO SHOW US WE WERE NOT WHERE I THOUGHT WE WERE. ALSO APCH ON MCP WAS NOT SELECTED AND WE WENT ABOVE GLIDE PATH BEFORE REALIZING MISTAKE. WE THEN DSNDED TO GLIDE PATH AND WERE STABILIZED BY 1000 FT MSL; BUT I AM NOT SURE IF WE MADE THE 2000 FT MANDATORY ALT AT N1X1N. I THINK I WILL LEAVE THE LESSON LEARNING TO OUR CHK AIRMEN. I SHOULD HAVE ASKED THE FO IF HE WAS READY FOR THE APCH CHKLIST WHILE STILL ON DOWNWIND LEG; AND THE ABOVE INCIDENT WOULD ALMOST SURELY NOT HAVE HAPPENED.
