A B737-500 ON CLB AT 16000 FT HAD BOTH L AND R ENG DRIVEN GENERATORS FAIL. ACCOMPLISHED DUAL GENERATOR FAIL CHKLIST RESTORED PWR.

Narrative

ON DEP; APCHING ABCDE INTXN; PASSING APPROX 16000 FT MSL; WE EXPERIENCED DUAL GENERATOR FAILURE. WHILE ANALYZING THE SIT; WE REQUESTED AND RECEIVED A BLOCK ALT AND HOLDING TO THE SW OF ZZZ. AFTER RUNNING THE DUAL GENERATOR CHKLIST; ALL SYS RETURNED TO NORMAL. SINCE WE WERE SO CLOSE TO ZZZ; I CONSULTED WITH DISPATCH AND MAINT CTL ON WHETHER TO CONTINUE ON TO ZZZ1 OR RETURN TO ZZZ. MAINT SUGGESTED RETURN TO ZZZ; AND I CONCURRED. RETURN TO ZZZ WAS UNEVENTFUL. AN EMER WAS NEVER DECLARED. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE ENG DRIVEN GENERATORS TRIPPED OFF SIMULTANEOUSLY AND REMAINED OFF A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME UNTIL COMPLETING THE DUAL GENERATOR FAIL CHKLIST; PWR WAS RESTORED. THE RPTR SAID THE STANDBY BUS AC/DC SYS WORKED AS ADVERTISED WITH NO INTERRUPTION. THE RPTR STATED MAINT AT THE DIVERSION STATION REPLACED A GENERATOR CTL PANEL AND OP OF THE GENERATORS CHKED OK. THE RPTR SAID THE AIRPLANE WAS FLOWN THE REMAINDER OF THE DAY; AND THE GENERATORS OPERATED OK.
