Narrative

THE LAST SEGMENT OF MY FLT PLAN FROM DTW TO LAX WAS CIVET INTXN; THEN THE CIVET 4 ARR. MY FMC WAS PROGRAMMED TO REFLECT THIS ROUTING. WITHIN A FEW MI OF CIVET; I WAS RECLRED VIA THE MITTS ARR AND THE NEW RWY WOULD BE RWY 24R. AS MY FO HURRIEDLY STARTED THE REPROGRAMMING OF THE FMC; I RETURNED THE RADIOS FOR THE NEW RWY. AT ABOUT THIS TIME; APCH CTL ADVISED ME TO REDUCE SPD FROM 250 KTS TO 180 KTS DUE TO PROX TO A HVY B747. IN MY OPINION; EVERY ATTEMPT SHOULD BE MADE BY ATC TO MAKE ROUTING CHANGES MORE TIMELY THUS GIVING AIRMEN PROPER TIME TO REPROGRAM THE NAV DEVICES. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 595989: WE DISCUSSED NOT PROGRAMMING THE FMS AS WE HAD NOT BEEN CLRED FOR IT AND THERE COULD BE ANOTHER CHANGE. WE WERE THEN CLRED TO DSND VIA THE MITTS ONE. WE WERE OVER CIVET AT FL180. THE XING RESTR ON THE MITTS ONE AT CIVET IS 17000 FT AT OR BELOW AND AT OR ABOVE 14000 FT. WE STARTED AN IMMEDIATE DSCNT TO MAKE 17000 FT. DURING THE HIGH WORKLOAD AND CONFUSION ABOUT THE ARRS; WE DEVIATED FROM THE ARR PATH ON THE MITTS ONE; WHICH NECESSITATED ATC INTERVENTION TO GET BACK ON THE ARR.
