Narrative
ON OCT/FRI/03; I FLEW PIPER CHEROKEE 6 FROM GREEN COVE SPRINGS; FL (7FL4) TO GETTYSBURG; PA (W05) WITH INTERMEDIATE STOP AT DARLINGTON; SC; (UDG) AND HAGERSTOWN; MD (HGR). THE FIRST LEG OF THE TRIP WAS AN IFR FLT FROM 7FL4 TO UDG. THE SECOND LEG OF THE TRIP WAS AN IFR FLT FROM UDG TO HGR. THE THIRD LEG OF THE TRIP WAS A VFR FLT FROM HGR TO W05. ON BOTH IFR FLTS I REQUESTED A STANDARD BRIEFING. IN DARLINGTON; I INQUIRED SPECIFICALLY ABOUT P40. IN HAGERSTOWN; I REFUELED AT FBO AND ASKED THE FBO HOW BEST TO AVOID P40 ON MY FLT TO GETTYSBURG. THE FBO SAID TO FLY N UNTIL I-85 AND STAY N OF THE INTERSTATE. ON DEP; HAGERSTOWN TWR ASKED DIRECTION OF FLT AND I REPLIED; '078 DEG RADIAL TO GETTYSBURG.' TWR REPLIED; 'THAT WON'T WORK. FLY 045 DEG RADIAL.' AFTER TKOF; I FOLLOWED DEP INSTRUCTIONS AND TURNED 045 DEGS UNTIL N OF I-85 AND THEN PROCEEDED TO GETTYSBURG. MY NAV EQUIP INCLUDES BOTH PORTABLE AND APCH CERTIFIED GPS AND BOTH IDENT THE P40 AIRSPACE. I HAD UPDATED BOTH DATABASES PRIOR TO FLT AND BOTH WERE CURRENT. NEITHER GPS INDICATED I HAD ENCROACHED ON P40. ON LNDG AT GETTYSBURG; THE FBO ATTENDANT TOLD ME THAT ZDC HAD CALLED AND REQUESTED ME TO CALL THEM. I CALLED ZDC AND RELAYED THE SAME INFO I HAVE JUST GIVEN. ZDC CALLED LATER AND SAID I WOULD BE CHARGED WITH A DEV. I THOUGHT I HAD AVOIDED P40.
