A B747 FREIGHTER STARTS THE DEP TURN IN THE WRONG DIRECTION AS PIC WAS USING THE WRONG DEP PROC. DEP CTLR CAUGHT THE MISTAKE 10 NE OF ANC; AK.

Narrative

ANC-NRT RWY 6R. PROB: WE FLEW THE ANC 3 DEP WHEN WE WERE CLRED FOR THE KNIK SIX. WHEN WE TURNED R TO 190 DEG HDG INSTEAD OF L TO A 330 DEG HDG THE CTLR HAD US CONTINUE OUR TURN TO 270 DEGS AND INFORMED US WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN FLYING THE KNIK SIX DEP. FACTORS: THIS WAS THE FIRST FLT OUT OF ANC AND THE FIRST SCHEDULED CARGO FLT OF THE DAY. THE CAPT AND FO GOT TO THE ACFT LATER THAN NORMAL BECAUSE THE CAPT'S CAB DRIVER GOT LOST AND THERE WERE 10 'NO-PICS' TO RESEARCH SO FLT PLANNING ALSO TOOK LONGER THAN NORMAL. RWY 32 WAS LISTED ON BOTH PRELIMINARY AND FINAL 'MGL'S' AS THE PRIMARY RWY. ALTHOUGH ATIS RPTED RWY 32 CLOSED; PLANES CONTINUED TO USE IT. OUR DEP CLRNC WAS THE KNIK SIX (BASED ON RWY 6). WE WERE STILL PLANNING TO USE RWY 32 AND THE CAPT BRIEFED THE ANC 3 D3P WHICH WAS NORMALLY USED WITH RWY 32. NO ONE QUESTIONED THE BRIEFING. WHEN THE CAPT CALLED FOR THE 'BEFORE START CHK' I MOVED THE APU BLEED SWITCH TO OPEN. THE SWITCH BROKE AND THE BLEED DID NOT OPEN. OUR ATTN WAS THEN DIVERTED TO THE MAINT PROB. WE BLOCKED OUT 25 MINS LATE. WE ASKED FOR RWY 32 AND WERE INFORMED THAT IT WAS CLOSED FOR MAINT. WE WERE THEN GIVEN RWY 6L. WE SAID WE COULD NOT MAKE THE 10 DME RESTR (STILL THINKING WE WERE DOING THE ANC 3). THE CTLR ASKED IF RWY 6R WOULD HELP AND WE SAID WE'D PREFER THAT RWY BUT WE STILL COULDN'T MAKE THE RESTR. HE THEN WAIVED THE RESTR. WE TOOK OFF AND FLEW THE ANC 3. IF I HAD BEEN PAYING MORE ATTN WHEN THE CAPT AND FO WERE GETTING THE CLRNC I COULD POSSIBLY HAVE CAUGHT THE MISTAKE. I WILL BE PAYING MORE ATTN TO THIS IMPORTANT AREA IN THE FUTURE. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 598227: RWY 32 (USUAL DEP RWY) WAS CLOSED. CLRNC WAS KNIK 6 DEP; READ BACK SAME. PF BRIEFED THE ANCHORAGE 3 DEP NARRATIVE AND NO CREW MEMBER REALIZED THE MISTAKE. THE USUAL DEP RWY 32 INSTRUCTIONS READ THE SAME FOR BOTH PROCS. FEELING RUSHED AFTER MECHANICAL DELAY. A PRIORITY FLT. CTLR ALSO MISSED THE FACT THAT WE HAD CHOSEN THE WRONG DEP. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 598388: MY FIRST TRIP OUT OF ANC AFTER XFERRING FROM HNL. WE WERE FLYING THE DESIGNATED PRIORITY FREIGHTER. I WAS VERY COGNIZANT OF BEING RUSHED; BUT TRIED TO BE AS METHODICAL AS POSSIBLE IN FLT PLANNING AND IN REVIEWING A TON OF HAZARDOUS CARGO FORMS. NOTICED ACFT WERE CURRENTLY DEPARTING RWY 32 EVEN THOUGH THE ATIS WAS CALLING IT CLOSED. WHILE CONDUCTING THE PLT BRIEFING THE FO BROUGHT UP THAT WE NEEDED TO LET GND CTL KNOW WE WERE UNABLE TO TURN RESTR TO 190 DEGS BEFORE 10 DME (THIS WAS ON THE ANC 3). WE ARE ALL CREATURES OF HABIT ALMOST ALWAYS USING THE ANC 3 OFF RWY 32. HARD TO BELIEVE THE CREW AND GND CTL FAILED TO NOTICE WE WERE ABOUT TO DEPART VIA THE ANC 3 OFF RWY 6.
