B767 FO QUESTIONS COMPANY CREW REST POLICIES CONCERNING SEAT ASSIGNMENT AND INEVITABLE INTERRUPTED REST INCURRED DURING LONG HAUL TRIPS.
Narrative
GOING ON 7 MONTHS SINCE THE ILL-ADVISED CHANGE IN OUR CONTRACT WHICH PERMITTED A PAX TO OCCUPY THE SEAT ADJACENT TO OURS IN THE PLT DESIGNATED REST SEAT; CREW REST HAS BEEN A CHALLENGE. MOVING THE REST SEAT DECREASED THE NOISE LEVEL OF FLT ATTENDANTS ALONG THE AISLE; BUT THE OTHER PART OF THE PROB HAS NOT BEEN RESOLVED. ON THIS FLT; THE PAX PUT NEXT TO US WAS A 400 LB MALE. HE SIMPLY WAS PHYSICALLY INCAPABLE OF NOT OCCUPYING A GOOD PORTION OF OUR CREW REST SEAT. THE RELIEF PLT ON HIS REST BREAK TOOK ONE LOOK AT THE SIT AND OPTED NOT TO SIT IN THE SEAT AND INSTEAD TOOK A SEAT IN COACH AND GOT NO REST AT ALL. ON MY REST BREAK; I KNEW THAT I NEEDED TO BE AT LEAST PARTIALLY HORIZ TO GET SOME REST SO I POLITELY ASKED THE PAX TO MOVE HIS ITEMS FROM MY SEAT. HE THEN KNOCKED HIS COKE AND SPILLED HIS ICE CREAM SUNDAE ALL OVER OUR REST SEAT. 20 MINS OF CLEANING LATER; I WAS ABLE TO SETTLE INTO THE REST SEAT. DURING MY 2 1/2 HR BREAK; I WAS AWOKEN ABOUT EVERY 10 MINS BY THE PAX'S ARMS DIGGING INTO MY CHEST OR ARM. THE CAPT RPTED THE SAME EXPERIENCE. YOU HAVE 3 CREW MEMBERS ON AN ALL NIGHT FLT WITH BARELY A MIN OF REST. THE SIMPLE FACT IS THAT WE ARE RUNNING A DANGEROUS OP RIGHT NOW. WE'RE GETTING LITTLE OR NO REST ON FAR TOO MANY FLTS. ARE WE GOING TO WAIT UNTIL WE HAVE A MISHAP BEFORE SOMETHING IS DONE?
