Synopsis

MIL SUPER KING AIR 200 FLT CREW LOSE POSITIONAL AWARENESS AND DSND PRIOR TO FAF ON APCH TO OQU; RECEIVING A PVD TRACON MSAW ALERT THROUGH OQU LCL CTL.

Narrative

IFR TRAINING FLT FROM NGU TO OQU. WX ALONG MAJORITY OF RTE WAS IMC; LIGHT TO MODERATE RAIN/ ICE AND TURB. UPON ARR AT OQU; PIC REQUESTED A VOR-A APCH. I BRIEFED THE APCH WHICH INCLUDED DME FROM NAVAID; PVD; TO OQU. ARRIVING FROM N ON ASSIGNED ALT OF 2000 FT; WE BROKE OUT OF THE CLOUDS AND SAW AN AIRFIELD WITH THE SAME RWY CONFIGN AS OQU; RWYS 5/23 AND 16/34. I STATED; WE SEEM REALLY HIGH FOR THIS APCH. AT THAT POINT; APCH SWITCHED US TO TWR AND I BEGAN A DSCNT TO 2000 FT TO LAND AT WHAT I THOUGHT WAS OQU. TWR CALLED AND STATED 'LOW ALT ALERT; CHK YOUR ALT.' I THEN REALIZED THAT THE VOR WAS AT PVD; NOT OQU; AND CLBED BACK TO 2000 FT AND REQUESTED VECTORS BACK AROUND FOR ANOTHER VOR-A APCH TO LAND AT OQU. RECOMMENDATION: IF PVD WAS DEPICTED ON THE DOD APCH PLATE; I WAS USING; I WOULD HAVE REALIZED THAT WE NEEDED TO FLY PAST 1 FIELD TO GET TO OQU. ONLY THE NAVAID IS DEPICTED ON THE DOD APCH PLATE. I SHOULD HAVE TAKEN A CLOSER LOOK AT THE ENRTE CHART WHICH DID DEPICT PVD; AND OQU WAS S OF THE NAVAID.
