Synopsis

C650 ON VISUAL APCH LANDED EGE WITHOUT ATC CLRNC.

Narrative

ABOUT 15 MI OUT OF EAGLE; CO (EGE); AND IN VMC CONDITIONS; APCH CTL ASKED US IF WE HAD THE ARPT IN SIGHT. WE RESPONDED THAT WE HAD IT IN SIGHT AND THEN WE WERE CLRED BY APCH FOR THE VISUAL RWY 25 AT EGE AND TO CONTACT THE TWR. AROUND 10 MI ON FINAL; WE PROCEEDED TO CONTACT THE TWR AND WERE TOLD BY THE TWR TO CALL BACK AT THE 6 MI POINT ON THE FINAL APCH. WE PROCEEDED TO CONTINUE THE APCH AND LANDED AT EGE. AFTER LNDG AND UPON EXITING THE RWY WE REALIZED THAT WE HAD FORGOTTEN TO CONTACT THE TWR AT THE 6 MI POINT AND REALIZED THAT WE LANDED WITHOUT A CLRNC FROM THE TWR. I PROCEEDED TO TELL THE CTLR THAT WE FORGOT TO CALL HIM AT THE 6 MI POINT AND THAT WE LANDED WITHOUT HIS CLRNC. THE CTLR THANKED US FOR 'OUR HONESTY' AND THEN I ASKED HIM IF WE NEEDED TO CALL HIM AFTER PARKING AND SHUTTING DOWN THE AIRPLANE. THE CTLR REPLIED THAT 'NO FURTHER ACTION WOULD BE TAKEN AGAINST US' AND TOLD US THAT IT WAS SOMETHING THAT WAS HAPPENING VERY OFTEN AT THIS ARPT AND THAT HE WAS FRUSTRATED BY THE SIT. THE FACT THAT WE WERE IN A MOUNTAINOUS AREA; DEALING WITH A HIGH RATE OF DSCNT ON THE APCH AND A HIGH COCKPIT LOAD ACHIEVING THE COMPLETION OF THE BEFORE LNDG CHKLIST AND DEALING WITH THE VARIOUS CALLOUTS REQUIRED BY OUR SOP'S CAUSED US TO MISS THE 6 MI CALL TO THE TWR. THE FACT THAT WE WERE THE ONLY AIRPLANE ON THE APCH; I BELIEVE THAT THE TWR SHOULD HAVE CLRED US TO LAND ON OUR INITIAL CONTACT. HOWEVER; I AM NOT USING THIS FACT AS AN EXCUSE AND BY THE WAY; WHEN THE CTLR TOLD US THAT 'NO FURTHER ACTION WOULD BE TAKEN AGAINST US;' I TOLD HIM THAT WE HAD LEARNED A VALUABLE LESSON AND THAT IT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN.
