A MAUL M5 PLT RECEIVING FLT FOLLOWING ON CONTACT WITH ZJX WAS TOLD NOT TO XMIT. AFTER 25 MI PLT LEFT FREQ; SQUAWKED 1200 AND LANDED. AFTER A PHONE SEARCH; THE PLT WAS TOLD HE FORGOT TO CLOSE HIS VFR FLT PLAN.

Narrative

I WAS FLYING VFR FROM CHARLESTON EXECUTIVE (JZI) SOUTH CAROLINA S DOWN COASTLINE. I DSNDED TO 3500 FT. SAV APCH PROCEEDED TO HAND ME OFF TO ZJX. I TOLD SAV I WANTED TO CANCEL FLT FOLLOWING AT THAT TIME. THEY TOLD ME I NEEDED TO CALL ZJX; THEY WERE EXPECTING ME. I TUNED IN JAX ON MY RADIO AND CALLED ZJX 'ACFT X; WITH YOU AT 3500 FT.' THE CTLR AT JAX IMMEDIATELY RESPONDED WITH; 'ACFT X; DO NOT CALL ME UNLESS I CONTACT YOU.' I TOLD MY FRIEND; THAT WAS WITH ME; THAT THIS CTLR NEEDED TO TAKE A BREAK; HE SEEMED A LITTLE PERTURBED. I PROCEEDED TO DEST AND LISTENED TO ZJX AS HE BARKED COMMANDS WITHOUT CEASING. ON 2 OCCASIONS; HE CALLED FOR EVERYONE NOT TO CALL EXCEPT FOR ONE PARTICULAR AIRPLANE HE WAS CALLING. I WANTED TO CANCEL FLT FOLLOWING; BUT DID NOT HAVE A TIME TO CALL IN SO I CHANGED SQUAWK ON XPONDER FROM MY ASSIGNED CODE TO VFR 1200. I CONTINUED TO MONITOR ZJX'S FREQ THINKING HE WOULD SEE MY XPONDER CHANGE AND CALL ME. I CONTINUED TO MONITOR 5-10 MINS AND REACHED MY DEST AND LANDED. I FORGOT TO CALL FSS. ONCE ON GND; I WENT BACK TO WORK. ABOUT 2 HRS AFTER I HAD LANDED; THE OWNER OF THE MAULE CALLED ME AND SAID ATC WAS LOOKING FOR THE AIRPLANE. HE TOLD THEM IT WAS IN THE HANGAR; EVERYTHING WAS OKAY. I HAVE USED FLT FOLLOWING MANY TIMES AND HAVE FOUND THEM TO BE VERY PROFESSIONAL AND CAUTIOUS. HOWEVER; THIS CTLR WAS OBVIOUSLY OVERLOADED WITH AIRPLANES AND GAVE ME THE IMPRESSION HE DID NOT HAVE TIME FOR A VFR PVT PLT. I REALIZE I SHOULD HAVE CANCELED FLT FOLLOWING. I MOST ASSUREDLY WILL NOT LET IT HAPPEN AGAIN. I THOUGHT FLT FOLLOWING WAS A GOOD PRACTICE SO THAT MORE AIRPLANES COULD BE IN CONTACT WITH SOMEONE PROVIDING A SAFER ENVIRONMENT FOR EVERYONE. BUT I MAY BE RELUCTANT TO USE IT AGAIN THINKING I WOULD ONLY BE A NUISANCE.
