PA24 PLT HAS NMAC WITH ACFT IN LNDG PATTERN AT A TWRED ARPT. PLT ALSO REPRIMANDED BY CTLR FOR FAILING TO CONTACT GND IMMEDIATELY AFTER CLRING RWY.

Narrative

TFC WAS VERY HVY. UPON INITIAL CONTACT WITH TWR; WE WERE TOLD TO ENTER A WIDE DOWNWIND TO RWY 25R; 2 MI N OF THE TWR. ENTERING DOWNWIND; WE RPTED AND NOTICED A PA28 ABEAM US ON DOWNWIND TO RWY 25R. FLYING PAST THE APCH END OF RWY 25R; TWR TOLD US TO FOLLOW A PA28 ON A 1 MI FINAL TO RWY 25R. ASSUMING THE TFC (PA28) WE SAW EARLIER ON DOWNWIND FOR RWY 25R WAS WHO WE WERE GOING TO FOLLOW; WE TURNED BASE AND STARTED TO LOOK FOR OUR TFC. TURNING FINAL; I SAW A PA28 ABOUT 50 FT HIGHER THAN US AND WE DOVE TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL CLRNC. ON SHORT FINAL; I ASKED FOR LNDG CLRNC AND WAS TOLD WE CUT OFF THE TFC HE WERE TO FOLLOW. CLRED TO LAND; WE LANDED; MADE A L TURN; AND TO MAKE SURE WE WERE WELL CLR OF THE RWY; WE TAXIED 150 FT PAST THE RWY AND HELD SHORT OF RWY 25L. CALLING GND CTL; WE SCOLDED US FOR NOT STOPPING IMMEDIATELY BEFORE CONTACTING HIM. OBSERVATIONS: ZZZ IS A VERY BUSY TRAINING ARPT WITH 1 FLT SCHOOL WITH ABOUT 40-50 PA28'S. 1) IF CTLR HAD GIVEN PROPER DISTANCE (ESTIMATED 3 MI INSTEAD OF RPTED 1 MI); THIS NMAC NEVER WOULD HAVE OCCURRED AS WE WERE LOOKING ELSEWHERE FOR OUR TFC. TO MY KNOWLEDGE; THE OTHER ACFT NEVER SAW US OR MADE ANY MANEUVER TO AVOID US. 2) AT ORD AND OTHER LARGE ARPTS; IF A PLT DOESN'T KEEP IT ROLLING WHEN EXITING A RWY ONTO A TXWY; THE CTLRS GET MAD.
