Narrative
F16'S WERE CONDUCTING TRAINING OPS AT SGH; A JOINT-USE MIL/CIVILIAN ARPT. I WANTED TO EXPOSE MY STUDENT TO TWR-CTLED OPS; SINCE WE NORMALLY FLY FROM A SMALL GRASS STRIP. UPON CALLING SGH TWR; WE WERE TOLD TO ENTER A L DOWNWIND FOR RWY 24. TWR ASKED THE FLT OF F16'S TO HOLD AT THE MARKER FOR THE ILS TO RWY 24. ONCE ON THE DOWNWIND; WE WERE CLRED TO LAND RWY 24 AND ASKED TO KEEP OUR PATTERN TIGHT. ON BASE LEG; TWR ASKED US TO PLAN TO CLR THE RWY AT THE FIRST TXWY (APPROX 1000 FT DOWN THE RWY); TXWY B. I ATTEMPTED; BUT WAS UNABLE TO CLR AT TXWY B. IT WAS CLOSE. CONSEQUENTLY I WAS AT A VERY SLOW SPD WHEN TWR ASKED ME TO HURRY TO THE NEXT TXWY H. THIS WAS PROBABLY 1000-1500 FT FURTHER DOWN RWY 24. THE F16'S WERE NOW ON THE APCH TO RWY 24 BEHIND US. THE TWR INSTRUCTED US TO CLR THE RWY AT TXWY H AND 'TAXI PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINE AND CONTACT GND.' I WAS NOT FAMILIAR WITH THIS PARTICULAR INTXN; WHICH HAS AN UNUSUAL CONFIGN. AS I CLRED THE RWY; I THOUGHT THAT I SAW THE HOLD SHORT LINE PASS UNDER THE ACFT. I STOPPED AND CALLED GND. IT SUDDENLY GOT VERY LOUD IN THE COCKPIT AS THE 2 F16'S WERE SENT AROUND BY THE TWR. WE COULDN'T HEAR ANYTHING THAT GND CTL WAS SAYING. AS IT TURNS OUT; I HAD NOT TAXIED PAST THE HOLD SHORT; BUT HAD STOPPED WELL SHORT OF IT. IN MY RUSH TO CLR THE RWY I DID NOT CAREFULLY LOOK FOR THE HOLD SHORT LINE; BUT CONVINCED MYSELF THAT I HAD SEEN IT WHERE I EXPECTED IT TO BE. I WAS TRULY SURPRISED WHEN THE GND CTLR POINTED OUT TO ME THAT THE HOLD SHORT LINE WAS ACTUALLY A GOOD 30 FT IN FRONT OF ME. I LEARNED THAT TWR HAD TO SEND THE F16'S AROUND BECAUSE I WAS 'TECHNICALLY' NOT CLR OF THE RWY. REFLECTING ON ALL OF THIS; I THINK THAT IT WAS PROBABLY A BAD IDEA TO TRY AND DO PRIMARY STUDENT TRAINING AT THIS ARPT WHILE THE F16'S WERE DOING TRAINING. WE WERE BEING RUSHED; TWR WAS BUSY; AND F16'S AND PIPER COLTS DON'T MIX WELL IN A TFC PATTERN. I ALSO LEARNED (AGAIN) NOT TO LET ONE'S EXPECTATIONS TO OBSCURE REALITY. LISTEN CLOSELY TO INSTRUCTIONS AND DOUBLE-CHK THAT I'VE MET THE REQUIREMENTS OF THOSE INSTRUCTIONS.
