RWY INCURSION DURING A NIGHT OP WHEN A TAXIING A319 FLT CREW CROSSES RWY 1L WITHOUT CLRNC WITH AN ACFT IN POS AND HOLD AT SFO; CA.

Narrative

DURING TAXI OUT FROM GATE; WE WERE CLRED TO RWY 1R VIA TXWYS A; G; AND B. WE BRIEFED THE RTE REFING OUR ARPT PAGES -- AS THE CAPT BEGAN TAXIING I ALREADY HAD OUR TKOF DATA ON REQUEST (PRIOR TO PUSHBACK) AND RECEIVED AN ACARS MESSAGE FROM DISPATCH THAT RWY 1R WAS LOCKED OUT. I FELT THE CAPT WAS COMFORTABLE WITH OUR TAXI INSTRUCTIONS AND KNEW WE HAD A SHORT TAXI SO I WENT 'HEADS DOWN' TO ADDRESS GETTING OUR TKOF DATA FOR RWY 1R FROM DISPATCH VIA ACARS. (I KNEW THAT RWY 1R WAS AVAILABLE SINCE WE WERE JUST CLRED TO IT -- I ALSO WAS AWARE THAT IT HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN NOTAMED OUT OF SVC FROM OUR PREVIOUS INBOUND LEG.) DURING THIS TIME PERIOD I HEARD THE CAPT CALL 'CLR L' AT WHICH TIME I INSTINCTIVELY LOOKED UP AND OUT TO THE R -- I SAW AN ACFT ON THE RWY IN POS; LIGHTS ON BUT NOT MOVING AND RESPONDED 'CLR R' AS WE WERE XING; AT WHICH TIME HE REALIZED THE ERROR AND HE STATED AS SUCH; WHICH IS WHEN IT HIT ME. WE CROSSED AN ACTIVE RWY WITHOUT CLRNC. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: POOR JUDGEMENT -- MY FAILURE TO BACK UP THE CAPT'S TAXIING DUE TO MY RUSHING TO GET OUR TKOF DATA IN A TIMELY FASHION SO AS TO NOT DELAY OUR TKOF. FATIGUE -- THE LATE NIGHT DEP FOR A BACK SIDE OF THE CLOCK FLT. WE HAD OUR ARPT DIAGRAMS OUT AND IN VIEW AND BRIEFED THE TAXI RTE PER COMPANY POLICY. WE SIMPLY MISSED THE R TURN ONTO TXWY B AND CROSSED RWY 1R AT TXWY G. THE LESSON HERE IS TO KEEP 'HEADS UP' AT ALL TIMES WHILE THE ACFT IS MANEUVERING. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 613705: BEFORE MOVEMENT OF THE ACFT; WE BRIEFED THE TAXI RTE THEN STARTED THE TAXI. I CALLED GND CTL AND TOLD THEM WE HAD MISSED THE R TURN ON TO TXWY B. I CALLED THE TWR AND TOLD HIM WHAT WE HAD DONE AND APOLOGIZED FOR THE MISTAKE. HE SAID THERE HAD NOT BEEN A CONFLICT WITH ANOTHER ACFT AND THEY WERE NOT GOING TO PURSUE THE MATTER. I SOMEHOW GOT IN MY MIND THAT I HAD TO CROSS RWY 1L TO GET TO TXWY B. A COUPLE OF FACTORS COME INTO PLAY HERE. OUR ORIGINAL TAXI CLRNC WAS TXWYS A; G; B TO RWY 1R. TXWY B DOES NOT GO TO RWY 1R. IF THE CLRNC WOULD HAVE BEEN TXWYS A; G; B; A; IT MIGHT HAVE CUED ME TO STAY ON THE W SIDE OF RWY 1L. THE OTHER FACTOR WAS THE RWY 1R BEING LOCKED OUT BY OUR DISPATCH. IT DIVERTED THE ATTN OF THE FO INSIDE THE COCKPIT. 4 EYES INSTEAD OF 2 PERHAPS WOULD HAVE CAUGHT THE ERROR BEFORE IT HAPPENED.
