Synopsis

A PA28 SINGLE PLT CUT OFF ANOTHER PA28 ON FINAL FOR RWY 31 AT WDR.

Narrative

I HAD ENTERED THE PATTERN AND WAS ON DOWNWIND FOR RWY 31. THERE WERE SEVERAL OTHER ACFT IN THE PATTERN AND I HEARD 2 PLANES CALLING FINAL; ONE EXTENDED. I CONTINUED IN THE PATTERN LOOKING FOR TFC AND TOLD MY KIDS (PAX) TO WATCH FOR OTHER AIRPLANES. AS I APCHED THE BASE LEG; I HEARD A PLANE CALL SHORT FINAL. I IDENTED THAT PLANE; HIGH WING; AND LOOKED FOR A SECOND PLANE. I DID NOT SEE ONE AND THOUGHT I MISSED THE FIRST ONE ON FINAL; DUE TO THE AMOUNT OF TIME GOING BY. I CALLED BASE AND THEN CALLED FINAL. AS I LEVELED OFF ON FINAL; I HEARD A PIPER ARROW COME OVER THE RADIO AND SAY 'NICE JOB CHEROKEE; I WAS ALREADY ON FINAL!' I LANDED AND TAXIED TO MY PARKING SPOT. A PIPER ARROW TAXIED IN NEAR ME A FEW MINS LATER. I APCHED THE PLT AND ASKED IF I HAD CUT HIM OFF ON FINAL. HE TOLD ME THAT I HAD AND HE WAS FORCED TO TAKE EVASIVE ACTION. HE ASKED IF I HAD HEARD HIM ON FINAL AND SAID THAT HE HAD CALLED THE PATTERN AS HE CAME IN. I APOLOGIZED AND TOLD HIM THAT I HAD HEARD THE 2 PLANES ON FINAL AND THOUGHT HE WAS THE SECOND ONE. I DID NOT SEE ANOTHER PLANE ON FINAL; SO I TURNED BASE AND THEN FINAL. HE TOLD ME THAT HE WAS SLIGHTLY BELOW ME AND I HAD TURNED FINAL RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM. HE SAID THAT HE WAS PROBABLY IN MY BLIND SPOT UNDER THE WING AS I TURNED AND HE WAS FORCED TO TURN R AND DSND QUICKLY. I TOLD HIM THAT I NEVER SAW HIM OR HEARD HIM UNTIL HE CALLED OUT 'NICE JOB.' I APOLOGIZED AGAIN; SHOOK HANDS AND WE PARTED WAYS. I WAS TELLING MY KIDS TO HELP ME WATCH FOR OTHER PLANES AND WAS DISTR. IF THE OTHER PLT HAD NOT SAID ANYTHING; I WOULD NOT HAVE KNOWN ANYTHING HAD HAPPENED. THE OTHER PLANE WAS APPARENTLY IN THE BLIND SPOT OF MY R WING. TO HELP MINIMIZE PROBS; I COULD HAVE CALLED ON CTAF TO VERIFY THAT THE PLANE I SAW ON SHORT FINAL WAS IN FACT THE SECOND PLANE ON FINAL; OR I COULD HAVE DIPPED MY R WING SLIGHTLY WHILE ON BASE TO ENSURE NOTHING WAS UNDER ME OR IN THE BLIND SPOT AS I TURNED ONTO FINAL.
