FLT CREW OF B744 CLRED TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 28R ON RWY 1R AT SFO DECIDE THEY ARE TOO CLOSE TO RWY 28R AND SO ADVISE TWR WHO ISSUES GAR TO ACFT ON SHORT FINAL.

Narrative

ON TAXI OUT; WE WERE ORIGINALLY INSTRUCTED TXWYS A; G; L; F SHORT OF RWY 28L; EXPECT RWY 28R. HOWEVER; DUE TO OUR SHORT TIME BEFORE WHEELS UP SLOT; OUR TAXI INSTRUCTIONS WERE CHANGED TO TXWYS A; F; RWY 1R SHORT OF RWY 28L FOR DEP ON RWY 28R. TWR TOLD US TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 28L ON RWY 1R WHICH WE DID. THEN THEY INSTRUCTED US TO CROSS RWY 28L AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 28R. AS WE APCHED RWY 28R; I ADVISED THE CAPT THAT WE WERE APCHING THE HOLD SHORT SPOT. HOWEVER; HE MISINTERPED WHAT I MEANT AND TAXIED PAST THE SPOT WHERE A HOLD SHORT LINE WOULD HAVE BEEN; HAD ONE BEEN PAINTED ON RWY 1R. HOLD SHORT LINES WERE PAINTED ON THE TXWYS IN BOTH DIRECTIONS DOWNFIELD AND WE COULD TELL THAT WE HAD TAXIED ABOUT 20 FT PAST THEM. ACR Y JET WAS CLRED TO LAND ON RWY 28R. ALTHOUGH WE WERE WELL SHORT OF THE ACTUAL RWY; SINCE WE WERE PAST THE IMAGINARY HOLD SHORT LINE; I ADVISED TWR THAT WE HAD ENCROACHED THE RWY AND THEY TOLD ACR Y TO GO AROUND. TWR THEN CLRED US ACROSS RWY 28R AND WE CONTINUED DOWN TXWY C TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 28R. IN CONCLUSION; IT MIGHT BE APPROPRIATE FOR ARPTS TO PROVIDE SOME SORT OF HOLD SHORT MARKINGS OR LIGHTING ON RWYS IF THEY ARE GOING TO BE USED AS TXWYS WITH HOLD SHORT INSTRUCTIONS. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 616749: I HAD NOT OPERATED THE ACFT FOR SEVERAL WKS DUE TO VACATION AND RESERVE STATUS. I WAS CONCENTRATING ON A SMOOTH OP AND I PROBABLY TOOK LONGER TO STOP THE ACFT THAN NORMAL. IT IS MUCH MORE DIFFICULT TO JUDGE THE STOPPING POINT ON A RWY THAN A TXWY SINCE THE RWY HAS NO YELLOW STOP LINES AND THE MARKER BOARDS ARE AWAY FROM ONE'S NORMAL FIELD OF VISION.
